Replacing e92 grilles

Hey guys, there is another way more thorough DIY for this that applies to e90s and to some extent e92's right here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3830

I wanted to do one for e92's also because I had a bit of trouble removing my grille using the above method. I wasn't going to do a DIY but if anyone has trouble this may make it a bit easier. Instead of just pulling the old grille out I needed to get behind it and unclip the grille.

Edit: I got this grille from Steve @ Trendix, a forum sponsor.

Here is what I did:

Remove these for hex nuts, 5/32's.

Pull the bumper cover back and reach behind the grille:

On the e92 there are 6 mounting points:

You need to hold the clip down and lightly pull on the section near where you are unclipping. Now, this is important; by far the most difficult clip for me was the one on the outside of the grille (closest to the headlight); do this one first. Unclip and lightly pull, then move along in a circle and keep unclipping and pulling. The grille will pop right out and will remain re-usable.

Now it's easy, just pop the replacement back in ALL clips at the same time (if you do one at a time the last one is a bitch:

Repeat:

Put back 5/32's hex nuts and profit.

(ignore that might angels and fogs are a different color, I was experimenting. )

That looks great. I can't wait to try this one myself. How was the painting, hard, tedious?

Shoulda mentioned I got the grilles from Trendix. I will edit first post.

I was going to paint mine myself (re: the other DIY I linked), but wanted to have the chrome set available in case I ever want to swap back.

That was shipped to Canada. It's probably less in the U.S.

As for the expense, it's all relative. I wanted a replacement grille and the ability to keep mine chrome. Trendix is the only place selling them, so there you have it.

That looks mean!

Now I'm really tempted to do that on my car... I wonder how those matt black grills would look on a jet black car...

Thanks for the DIY!

Nice writeup and pics. So the pull-off-push-on approach doesn't apply to the E92 grilles installation?

Admins, please add to DIY master list. Thanks.

It might, but my car was having none of it. I put on gloves and pulled pretty damned hard and it wasn't budging. I wanted to be able to re-use the grilles so I just popped off the hex nuts. It only took about 20 min all together.

looks great, did this to my car today. Super easy and took me 10 minutes.

Ill post some pictures in this thread! However, the polished black grills clash with the silver mesh, i gotta swap that for some black soon!

Everything clashes with that damned mesh. I hate it.
