Video about importing car from US (features 335i as example)

They explained all the costs required to bring a car in from the USA, then they gave several sample calculations featuring a Matrix, 335i and Corvette. I've seen so many people ask questions about importing, its all revealed now!

Incidentally they don't mention US sales tax that might be payable on the vehicle... not sure if that is the case or not.

The show confirms what I always held to be true; importation can be worth while for higher end cars - it may make sense for example for the future M3 (depending on the pricing difference). But the 3 Series generally speaking (outside the M3) it is not worth it.

Wow, excellent thread. Who knew that a Corvette could be profitable here in Canada.

we don't have to pay the state sales tax as we're not the citizens of that state, even if the tax is levied at first, you can claim it back at the customs office

Ah, good to know. I do know you usually get charged up front for it, and some dealers require a US address as a formality... but if you can get it back that's good.

I think you can do well on used as well. With sites like ebaymotors the used car market seems much more competitive. Also, they're going by MSRP and as we've seen US car dealers discount a lot more than their Canadian counterparts. But yeah, personally I wouldn't risk the warranty issues and go through all the headaches for the sake of saving any less than $5K.

I was actually trying to figure out if it would be worth buying the car from the States. I guess for me it wouldn't have been.

Now I do wonder if we went to purchase the car from a Province that doesn't have PST. No border to cross, I wonder if we would have to pay PST once we brought the car into Ontario??

Now we can see that the more expensive the more the more we save. But if people can afford a car in 6 figures range, what's the point of saving?

Interesting video Nicholas - thanks for sharing.

A great site for more information is http://www.riv.ca. Having just imported my 06 330i from North Carolina in early Nov. I found their site to be very valuable. All told, I saved $9K+ on my car after GST, Duty, PST, Safety, Excise tax, RIV fee and permit transfer on my plates as opposed to buying the same car that was on a BMW lot in Toronto (same color, packages, mileage etc.). The whole process is pretty straight forward, but takes some time. I didn't have to pay NC state tax, as I didn't live in NC. The only down side is the free scheduled maintenance doesn't carry over the border, but the warranty remains with the vehicle.

Ado -- unfortunately, you'll still have to pay the PST on a vehicle that was purchased out of province. Check out this link for more info: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dan...e/rgoutcan.htm
