I know R&D sets the price for a lot of parts... I am curious, what are the actual costs in terms of hardware on these units?

Not meant to be sour at all. I am just curious.. these things look cool.. I am just curious of actual hardware cost. I was thinking around $50-60

I say more than $50, but $100 max, mostly because of the OEM harness connectors. This thread will be closed soon by the way.

As far as hardware/assembly costs of the computer itself (no harness), the Procede is around $170. JB3 around $40. In both cases, the PnP harness is actually the more costly item.

The development time and firmware are where the real costs are. Not to mention support. But one can easily add up the components on each, estimate labor at $10 per unit in quantities of 1000, etc. I've done it before and including enclosures it's less than $100 for the procede (excluding any royalties) and around $35 for the JB3. The harness is the most expensive part. Although the costs are low, if you compare them with a flash tune that is 100% intellectual property with zero hardware value.

Thank you both. I agree there is a lot that goes into it.. support, development, etc. By no means do I think the prices are high from either of you guys. I remember back in the day a tune was $4k-6k for a renntech, or kleeman tune on an AMG.. until others came out and it lowered the "mercedes" tax. I think anything under $1000 is fair, the lower the better.

What does it matter? I've built a dozen systems in my lifetime relying entirely on open source (free) software where the end customer paid hundreds of thousands to a few million dollars in the end...if you're just curious only then this question/thread makes sense..

Was just curious. I find it very fascinating that little electronic components can do so much. I remember going through threads from 2007 when these 1st came out, and looking at it now and how advanced they are.. its remarkable.

Damn.... maybe we should ask you to make them for us. Funny how I got the jb3 estimate with $5 and you are off by $70.

So by this you are saying that when purchasing a piggyback you get more "value"? You are funny!

We looked into making PNP harnesses for our old tune and when we found the prices it was absolutely jaw dropping. The harness costs about 200$ plus man hours to make. One wouldnt think so considering it is a bunch of wires with pins.

I'm viewing this on an IPhone and could only see this post (and not who posted it cause it was off the screen as I was zoomed in). The funny thing is that I knew you posted it! Did a piggyback molest you in the night when you were a little tyke or something? You sure have a lot of discontent for them!

One thing to remember about AMG software (I use to have one) is the DEMAND. AMG cars truly have low production numbers (SC even lower) and most of their owners do NOT mod their cars. The price are obscene, but it is a supply and demand issue.
