Recommendation on Tires

Getting my car soon and will be ditching the stock RFTs for ultra-high performance summer tires. New set up will be:

Front Tires: 255/35/20
Rear Tires: 285/30/20

Limited choices locally in Hong Kong. Need to choose from:

Yokohama Advan Sport, Total 1 set: US$1,780

Bridgestone S001, Total 1 set: US$2,150

Pirelli P Zero Hero, Total 1 set: US$2,130

Michelin PS 2, Total 1 set: US$2,090

Based on the above, what do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Surfing the web for research and note that Consumer Reports November 2010 issue just came out. For those of you who are interested:

Three tires tied at top and scored 82 points: Goodyear Eagle F1 GT Asymmetric, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2.

Two tires finished with 80 points: Continental Extreme Contact DW and the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo.

Seven tires (in the order they were listed) scored 78 points each: Pirelli P Zero, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT, BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW, Kumho Ecsta SPT, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position, Nitto NT 05 and Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.

oh man they are expensive..why don't u go with the stock size? 245/35/20 and 275/30/20?
and are those all we have in hk?? no dunlop, continental or goodyear??
what about bridgestone RE001 (RE760 sport in US). does it come in our size?
out of those choices.. PS2 for me.

yeah, juztin. they will cost me an arm & a leg.

got the 9J front and 10.5J rear rims, concave look, made to order so no spacers required. that's why i will go for the 255 & 285. not much difference on price tough from the 245 & 275.

Also asking for quotes for Continental ExtremeContact DW, Hankook Ventus V12 Evo, Goodyear Eagle F1 GT Asymmetric & Dunlop SP Sport Maxx. no reply yet and not sure if they are available in Hong Kong.

The Bridgestone S001 is new and is more superior than bridgestone RE001/RE760 sport. probably won't go for this as this is new and the most pricey.

yea i am interested in Conti EntremeContact DW as well. but not sure if they are available in HK..
one thing about max performance tires you mentioned above is that they are harsh, noisy and wear quickly compare to high performance summer.. and high performance summer is cheaper as well. so it's something to think about if you don't throw your car around much.

I would try the Bridgestone S001 just to see how this tire performs. But for value, Conti DW would be the better choice.

or you can ask grimlock how he shipped tires from the US.. shipping was under 3k hkd for him.. if it is not too troublesome you will have a saving as tires in the states are so much cheaper.. and they have more choices too.

Here is a pic of it.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ot+Super+Sport

The tire tread comprises three different compounds: a track-type compound on the outer shoulder to withstand the extreme pressure of circuit driving, a compound at the centre of the tread especially designed for superior performance at very high speeds, and an inner shoulder compound designed in combination with the tire construction to maximize the amount of rubber in contact with the road for secure road-holding.

extreme DW not availible in HK .. its a super soft comfort tire so good for big rims, but its sidewall is super soft, so it will feel squidgy in the front
its cheap in US, compared to the (other) premium tires
u r lucky u have so many choices at your size in HK, if you want to order from tirerack, they only accept wire for international, go to myusdotcom open an account and send it there, then send to hk. total cost is 3k. so ucan calculate the total from tirerack, then add 3k (also add hassle, it is required)
if u do not like any of the tires in hk, or its alot cheaper at tirerack..
otherwise just go local.. have u tried lifting a tire or rim? its heavy

oh on more thing, if u use non-local tires, if u bust a tire .. u r in trouble, since u must wait for the re-order to arrive, cannot fix locally (unless u use same size, diff brand -not good for rear)
but if you're keeping your old set and they are the same circumference, u can use as temp until your new one arrives. but your new set is totally different with, u would have to drive slow only, esp rear

yeah, seems very troublesome to order oversea. guess i'll just buy from local. already have enough to choose from and don't want the hassle of ordering replacement from oversea.

now, still undecided. most likely will choose from michelin PS2 or bridgestone S001. the S001 is the factory fitment for Aston Martin Rapide and Ferrari 458 Italia. has any fellow members here put on these tires? any feedback?

Hi RC3 .

So you got your rims and soon to have new tires...wheres your car??

I got the advan sports. Not a bad tire for the price, the grip is not bad. The only negative thus far is it seems a bit nosier than other tirs in my experience.

I only have about 1200KM on mine. Can't say yet.

If the PS2's are getting replaced soon, perhaps you can find some good deals, as I'm sure the dealers want to exit thier stock.

decided to go for the advan sport, save a few bucks and tire profile less rounded as the others. not sure about the noise but the shop told me it is about the same as PS2.

needed the few extra bucks since I can't get rid of my E46 (may be it does not want to leave me). a few deals almost made but blew after all. so may eventually need to keep it and rent another parking space.

anyway, i have great fun to drive my cabrio with weather like this now in Hong Kong

the BMW dealer try to push me to get my F10 before I can sell my E46. he just wants to meet the 2010 quota. but i want to get my car by Jan. he tried to trick me by saying company policy and blah blah blah. i have checked the contract and don't seem to find anything on that.

guess i will get my car by Jan. need more time to settle my selling/car park renting, insurance and so forth.

BTW, decided not to go for the BMW insurance. my existing insurance dealer is HK$1,300 cheaper per month. terms almost identical, except for windshield. BMW with original replacement but $3,000 deductable. Mine free replacement but not original, what the heck.
