question regarding NC inspection

question about NC inspection....

I am thinking of doing 2 things here and would like some feedback.

1st- deleting the 2nd cats. I have a 330 and already have a res delete and custom exhaust. will deleting the 2nd cats fail inspection?

second question- If I get headers, it will delete the primary cats. will this fail inspection? I would have 2nd cats in place, but am wondering of it would fail since primary cats are gone?

please let me know. Dying for some more power here, and the best way for my car is for those cats to go!

thanks guys.

Sorry man, I am not very familiar with your car and the inspection procedure in NC, but I'd try to find a small place, go there early in the morning on a weekday and see what kind of inspection operator you deal with. I am pretty sure you can help him misread the results of the sniff test one way or another.

Does NC do emissions tests?

Ill be moving to Chapel Hill in December and will need to get my car inspected. Where I live now the inspection is a joke so I never had a problem.

I dont even have a res/cat/muffler delete, just a new magnaflow muffler so Im just curious.

My car is registered in NC and they only scan for emission codes (Asheville, NC). This could be different county to county, but in my county its just a code reader. So, all you need is O2 sims.

so if I had O2 sims I would be fine? even if they do not see any cats?

what about deleting just the 2nd cats but keeping the primary cats in? would this pass inspection?

My STi had all of these and passed, I think as long as you have one on there somewhere down the pipe it does a good enough job to keep it legal. Or you could find a hole in the wall shop, throw them a $20 and get the sticker...

As long as you have a set of cats you'll be fine. For them to look, most likely they'll have to look under the car. As far as the resonators, all they are there for is to reduce the noise level of the exhaust. If anything, depending on how loud your exhaust is, the problem will be with the cops, not the emission. On newer cars, they usually just read codes from you OBDII plug and make sure that you do not have any emission problems. Just make sure that your check engine light is not on and even though, just have somebody read it, because you might have what is called a "Phantom Code", which the check engine light will not be lit up, but you' ll have a code stored in the computer. Hope that this helps you.

removing secondary cats is not illegal in NC and should not throw a code since the 02 sensor is before them. you could possibly get a "phantom code" as mentioned just from the front cats running a little hotter than usual due to higher flow (from getting rid of the secondaries)...unlikely though. they do not sniff test in NC anymore, they are just supposed to visual inspect for cats on cars older than OBD2 and plug into the port for OBD2.

Unless they can prove that by you removing the sec. cats messed up the engine somehow, then they'll void the warranty. But to answer your question, no the warranty will no be voided by the dealership. So you are good.

My shop does a visual inspection...

However, I am slammed and just pull up completely spun down so that they cannot drive it up the ramps.

Muahah. I just passed last week.
