Unhappy Consumer Reports has a few problems with the new 5

The latest Consumer Reports liked the new 5-er a lot, but had some concerns regarding the handling and suspension. They say, "the new electric steering doesn't transmit feedback well. The car is impressively planted on bumpy corners. At the track, it adhered to the chosen line well enough and proved secure. However, when pushed to its limits, understeer was pronounced and its compromised front grip robbed capability and driver confidence. This reduced the car's speed through our avoidance maneuver."

I don't agree with that sentiment exactly. However, I am having another issue on my 2011 550i they noted. They continue, "But some sharp bumps can reverberate throughout its structure." I have had a similar issue with the suspension on my 2011 550i. When I go over a "ledge" in the road, say an inch or so drop, the rear wheels make a loud thud and it feels like the car is bottoming out. It is very unnerving. Granted, I don't want a Lexus ride, but this is a bit much. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Suggestions?

I got that sound yesterday. I was pulling out of a parking lot onto a highway. I thought I clipped the curb but nothing on the wheel. TG I hate curb rash.

I think what you're experiencing may be attributable to the RFT's

I've had this exact issue in my 550i with the dynamic handling and 19"s. Its specifically sharp step downs at speed like you mentioned. It handles bumps fairly well tho in general. Does any one know if this problem stopped with different tires?

I agree with your suspension issue. I have the same problem on my
two-week-old 528i. The ride seems particularly harsh, and the rear
suspension seems non-existent. I'm wondering how much of this
is attributable to the run-flat tires. I wish BMW would have given
us a choice: run-flats or standard tires. My 2003 325ci rode much
better and had a much more solid feel.

Talking UPDATE: Recall for Fuel level sensor also reprograms suspension

UPDATE: I took my 550i in for the recall on the fuel level sensor and mentioned the suspension issue (harshness on bumps). They told me that updating the suspension programming is included in the recall and that it should take care of the problem. I HAVE noticed a better ride, but dont worry...it's still SPORTY.

I have similar problem to. Its the software not understanding there is a sudden drop in elevation.

Tires won't make a difference.

I think this problem doesn't happen if there is no adaptive damper options

Imho

That was the claim the dealer service center made. If the recall applies to you, they will notify you.
