RFT + Nail = FAIL

Any of you guys have experience patching RFT's on an F10 or E60? Spoke to Discount Tire in Glendale, and they said, that from what I was describing it's patchable. Didn't drive on it. Take a look...

I would say patchable. Never had them on my E60's but my wife's old X5 had the RFT's and she had tires successfully patched. The RFT's use a very hard plastic in the sidewalls to provide the support once air pressure is lost. If the nail is too close to the sidewall, that plastic could be damaged, compromising the tire. In the center of the tread it is patchable...

That is patchable based on its location. Had it in my E60 RFT.

Makes me want to reconsider getting that tire and rim insurance.

You know in hindsight, I still would opt out of the tire insurance. You have to continue buying the RFT's for the insurance to be valid. The tire protection program was for 5 years $1688. The OEM RFT replacements are $1500 before tax and mounting. I'm leaning towards getting normal tires when these wear out.
Continental ExtremeContact DW - $962
Yokohama ADVAN Sport - $1058.00
Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position - $1188.00
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 - $1328.00

Doesn't the $1688 include the rims too for insurance?

Yes, I think it does. But it's only for 5 years.

Have to say, these are the first RFT tyres I've driven on.. I think they are very poor. I'm having a mare with handling. I do think its a mixture of tyre and lack of dampening (I have active suspension not dampening).. I'm very unhappy about how stable this F10 is in the dry, let alone in the wet.

I think I will wear these tyres down and replace with normal tyres.

When I got my tire/rim insurance for my E60 and now F10, I confirmed that they would still cover my tire rack set of aftermarket snow tires/wheels, regardless if it is RFT or not.

Patchable. I've had a nail go in a similar location on the family E90 and just patched it like a normal tire. Ran tens of thousands of miles without any problems. Most E90post members patch RFTs like normal tires as long as the nail is clearly in the contact patch and not on (or close) to the sidewalls.

Gato.............I thought you got a new Tire and Rim (because of the chip). Was it just the rim?

A Screw or Nail in the location you had is very repairable....as long as the guys doing the work don't screw something else up....like damaging a rim or knocking off the internal portion of the pressure sensor. Also need to make absolutely sure that the wheels are properly balanced. I always ask for their top expert to do the job, having had too many experiences in the past where they put some kid on it, and result with having to do it all over again.

Just a new rim. They patched the tire. Strangely enough a new tire is almost as much as a new rim, yeah Run Flats! Yeah I checked out the weights on the old rim, and the new one had the same weights on the same position, so I was satisfied. The tire shop also gave me a $100 credit towards my next purchase, which was a nice gesture. I also asked if I could keep the damaged rim, but they send they needed to give the core back to BMW dealer to get a credit for the new rim, so no such luck there.

Worked in a tire shop when I was 17 and our favorite customers were the BMW and Mercedes drivers cause we always talked them into getting new tires when they came in with a nail like this. This is the easiest and most effectice place to patch or plug a tire. You are good to go with either. A patch is longer lasting but a plug is not a bad choice either. I had a plug on my old 3 series with a sport package that I used to drive really rough and it lasted me for a couple of years. I did get in the old tire shop I used to work in and yes the young guys there did try to sell me a brand new tires LOL.... Using the same things I used to say. LOL.

Your Goodyears are covered by the Goodyear warranty for the first year or 2/32 to include road hazards. I hit a pothole and broke a belt and it cost me $1 to replace the tire.

I called 2 different dealers and they said that the tires were not covered under warranty for road hazards, only manufacturers defects. Is there some other place to go with this?

I plugged mine in my E90 323. Had about 5 of them done over a period of 5 years. No problem what so ever.

When I bought my Mini, my first car with runflats, I had already ordered real tires (tyres) before the car was even delivered. The day after I got the car I put the new tires on and sold the RFTs for about 50% of retail. That car rode so badly it needed every bit of help that I could give it!

I replaced the RFTs on my E92 at 16K miles and had a noticeable improvement in ride quality and reduced noise.

Since this F10 is a lease, I want to plan my tire replacement so that I only have to do it once, so I'm going to wait a year or two, but for sure, I'm not buying any RFTs if I can help it.

I know why BMW goes this route, but I don't like it.

What warning did you get on your i-drive? I had a nail in my left rear tyre yesterday. The warning came on but it showed the picture of the car with all 4 tyres in yellow. Normally they should be green. I thought that only the tyre with a problem should show yellow on the screen. I then had to check all 4 tyres for pressures and then only noticed the left rear pressure was low. Is this how the system works???

honestly, it's been so long I can't remember what warning I got. Sorry. It wouldn't surprise me if the TPMS systems worked differently on different continents.
