OK all you Philadelphia lawyers....

I know the issue of (Ontario) front plates has been discussed *several* times b4.... BUT;

For obvious reasons , this is a hot topic for me again.
I followed a link from the MTO site to the highway traffic act (Ontario)

LINKY

I can't find anything there that says a front plate is required
Anyone else care to try....

I'm a lawyer so I know that many things you are looking for aren't necessarily found in the specific statute. Have you tried looking through the regulations under the HTA?

See s. 7(1)(b)(i) of the Act that says:

Permit requirements

7. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless,

(a) there exists a currently validated permit for the vehicle;

(b) there are displayed on the vehicle, in the prescribed manner,

(i) number plates issued in accordance with the regulations showing the number of the permit issued for the vehicle, or

The word "prescribed" means prescribed by the Regulations.

So looking at the Regs, here you go (s. 9(3) of R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 628):

Number Plates

9. (1) Evidence of validation issued for use on a number plate shall be affixed,

(a) where the permit is for a commercial motor vehicle, in the upper right corner of the number plate exposed on the front of the motor vehicle; and

(b) in all other cases, in the upper right corner of the number plate exposed on the rear of the motor vehicle. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (1).

(2) Despite subsection (1), a RUO sticker shall be affixed in the upper left corner of the number plate exposed on the front of the bus. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (2).

(3) The number plates for a motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle or a motor assisted bicycle, shall be attached to and exposed in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the motor vehicle. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (3).

However, for some reason, I can't find out what the fine is for not having a front plate. Anyone?

Thanks Jackson....

There are a number of plate related fines listed in the HTA...
It's a little vague, but most are $100. min.

Saw an E90 325i without a front plate on the DVP last week. It looked very nice in the rear view mirror.

Damn it! What the hell is the purpose of a front bumper license plate? So that when you go to 407 they could take a picture of your Rear license plate and charge you? or have the police chase you from behind and take your number? Or do they just like the cars in the city to look absolutely hideous when you look at them from front!?

I saw a Ferrari 612 the other day, poor car had a front license plate! It had taken away all the glory...

+1, i often see ferraris and lambos with front plates, and it totally ruins the whole flow of the lines of the car, too bad and shameful that our government has to put fines on things that does little or no harm to the general public, they should fine the REAL bad guys out there!!
