335i @ the track
OK, my car was finally broken in and i took it to the track friday....
my friend ran a 13.64 @ 102mph , then i ran a 21.5@ 70 mph.... the first run went great, my friend said he could have launched a little bit harder... and ran a faster time ... I on the other hand... had a fwd car with one of the strongest trannies ever ... so i was used to launching realy hard and spinning tires... but when i tried to do it on this car, it worked fine at staging but when i went to the line, the clutch just would not hook... i thought i was spinning tired for a second, but i eventually realized something was horrible wrong... anyway... long story short, my clutch was totally burned from one fucked up pass at the track ... and there were soo many cars on the way back i couldave raced... the one good thing that came out of this was that i destroyed the new g35 that was talking shit the whole way up there and only managed to run 14s ... I also ran into another 335i owner at the gas station... he said he ran a 13.4 the week before on an automatic one... i am guessing our cars really like the weather right now... i got few questions thou : 1. can the clutch be covered under warranty 2. is there a performance clutch available for this car? 3. was this entirely my fault or does the car just come with a weak clutch? 4. whats the best way to launch this car? I believe hes saying his old car was a FWD with a strong tranny so he knows how to launch. But burnt out the clutch on this car.

You should talk to your service advisor at the dealership. Of course, don't mention that you were drag racing at the track. I'm sure you can come up with something creative I've launched my car multiple times and my clutch is holding up as if it were new. There really is no reason to bring the revs above 2500 rpms. I haven't been able to visit our local dragstrip since they are closed for 2007 so I don't know what the optimal engine speed should be. Here is a link to BMWs maintenance info

Yeah, if your clutch is gone already, then i would think someting ios defective with it, my hondqa civic clutch held up with quite a bit of abuse.

If they try to hassle you, stand firm. Even though it should be warrantied against it blowing up this soon, if you do tell them you hammered it they could nail you. I had the same issue with my STi (actually, just ground bad into 2nd often) and they said I had to sign something saying I would pay for any repairs if they found that it was from abuse. Keep in mind I was 34 years old at the time so they could use the "punk kid" excuse. Needless to say I traded the car in the next day; last Subaru I'll own...

also, take in to consideration that the 335i has peak torque available from 1500-5000 rpm, which is amazing to get the car off the line, and once you pass 4000 rpm the horsepower begins to take over. so in summary, i'd say probably rev to around 2000rpm, and let the natural torque from the car carry you. it's not really necessary to rev to higher rpm than that, and i'm afraid your clutch paid for it should be replaced for free. say you did NOTHING wrong. |

I have found that if you're quick enough you can let off the clutch and brake torque the car to about 1200 rpm. Let her rip on the last yellow.

With my "testing" I've found this car likes around 1700 for a quick clutch launch or 2000 if you can slightly slip the clutch. Once we bolt on some slicks we'll have to add another 3000rpm to those numbers!

i've only had the car for two weeks, but in those two weeks i put 1870 miles on it...
my other car is a 94 celica with a mr2 turbo motor (3sgte) currently parked... anyway, my friend said she has a friend thats a service advisor, and i got another friend who does a little bit of thier warrenty work... so i should be okay, worst comes to worst... i'll upgrade to one that can handle my launches... i launched a little bit under 3000k , but where i mest up , is that i floored it too soon... the clutch hooked, but as soon as i floored it , its slipped disgustingly... so no one else ran into trouble with thier clutches??? this car has a very tall final drive ratio (3.08) this puts a lot of strain on the cluch from a standing start, lower revs would be advisable, and let the engines low down torque work for you. There is no need to 'torque convert' by slipping the cluch on this car, unless you have slicks you wont put the power down anyway.

yes in the US it is a "track"... too looks like a weak clutch to me, try to get it fixed. I would prefer to do real track days on a circuit with this car than dragstrip, my .02
