Advice Request- Burning MP3s

Folks,

Apologies if this has already been answered, I did a quick search and didn't find a "Dummies Guide" to burning MP3s, not that I expected to.

I've never really embraced the whole MP3 thing, but now that I have a car that will play MP3s, I guess it is about time that I did.

I was wondering what tools and settings you all use to burn MP3s?

1. Which tool, WMP, Nero, etc.
2. Which bit rate?
3. Which codec?

Any advice/pointers appreciated.

With kind regards,
Phil.

Use iTunes... it is available on Mac or PC. Set your import preference to MP3 at 192kbps and your burn settings to "MP3 CD." That should do it.

Just pop in your music CDs and rip the music from CD to iTunes. Then select the songs you want and click burn. Easy...

Just use Nero Burning Rom. Create a normal data CD. Choose all your MP3's. Drag and drop them on the cd and burn it.

O and another thing. The cd player also supports WMA music format as well.

I just burned my first disc for the car tonight with Nero Ultra v7. VERY easy to do. I ripped @ 192k using the Lame encoder that's built-in. Saved 6 albums in individual Windows folders, then also using Nero 7, created MP3 CD. All 6 albums only used about 2/3 of the CD space, and the results were perfect.. and my non-idrive head unit displays the full artist & title names perfectly. 192k sounds pretty good but I'm going to screw around tomorrow with higher bit rates and see if I might want to give up a little bit of space for improved sound.

If I do a back to back comparison at home on high end stereo gear, I can tell some difference. In a noisy car, I can't tell at all.

sound qaulity

I've wasted tons of time playing with mp3 formats. It is clearly not a qood as regular CDs even at the higher bit rate sampling. In my opinion, MP3 is worthless on a good stereo and only passable in a car where the overall sound quality is not as good.

For what its worth, I've also noted a pretty large difference between original CDs and CDs that have been ripped as AIFF and then burned as a regular music CD. After playing around, I found that burning the AIFF CD at 2x speed is much superior to faster burning and roughly equivalent to 1x burning. Also, Sony blank CDs sounded better than Maxell or TDK. All auditioning was done on a pretty decent home system, so these differences may not be evident in every situation.

Burning MP3 but no sound.

Hi,

Still having problems hearing MP3 CDs after burning using iTunes software. I record audio books from BMW using iTunes and it plays on my DVD player and computer. When I play on my BMW Professional radio the radio display the titles of the book but there is no sound.

See below from previous thread#13175:

I have a 325xi with the BMW Professional radio and no I Drive. I burned a CR-R with two short stories from BMW (see the Owner's Circle). I used iTunes and SoundRecord software that came with my HP Pavilion notebook. I can playback the MP3 files (yes they have the MP3 file extension) with the computer and my DVD player but not in the BMW Professional Radio.

The radio displays the two MP3 short stories OK on it's display and seems to be running. But I do not get any audio.

HELP. What am I doing wrong? The "Owners' Manual for Radio" is not much help.

Can anyone give some advise?

Are you sure you have Itunes set to burn in mp3 format and not its native AIFF (or whatever it's called)?

I used Nero, and for a Windows system I strongly recommend it. I also want to experiment burning in .wma (Windows Media) format, which allegedly is also compatible.. reportedly produces better sound quality than mp3.

They are MP3 files

Kevin,

Yes, the files are MP3 files. I verified this on the computer with Windows Explorer. As I mentioned, the Professsional radio reads the CD and displays the titles of the two audiobooks. The radio also says "MP3".

I may try saving the audiobooks as a .WAV file like the auudio CDs to see if it works.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Ok....I'm sure this has been covered before, but WOW are there tons of threads on this whole mp3 subject, and finding an answer is difficult at best...non-nav and INav mixed together to boot!

Here's the deal. I've burned several CDs, one using Nero with all the suggested (and proven) settings, and another using ITunes, again using the suggested and proven settings. Listening to the CDs is no problem whatsoever. Both programs produce what appear to be identical products. The problem is, I only see "Track X" (where X= track number)...no title, album, or artist information. I can press the "Curr" button and see the actual mp3 files with their extensions, and I can scroll through them using the right knob on the head unit (using the steering wheel controls changes the selected file, but doesn't scroll the display??), and even select from the file list using the right knob...but I simply do not get any title/artist information in the display.

Can somebody tell me....
1. Is there something I must do with the head unit's buttons to properly display the title/artist info? or...
2. Is something missing on my CDs (again, I've used tried and true settings)?

MP3 player function works

Hi,

Just downloaded some MP3 music and burned it to a CD-R using iTunes software. I tried it in my BMW professional radio and it worked fine. I had good audio volume.

I tried burning the BMW audio books again using the exact procedure that I used for the MP3 music and nada. No sound like before.

I have emailed BMW and am having an ongoing discussion with them. They say that the audio books should work. I suggested that I email them a copy of the audio books from the burned CD that I am having trouble with to try. There has to be something simple to all of this.

Would anyone on e90post be willing to try burning from my CD and see if they get no sound also?

Thanks

Wallyf

Finally Successed in Burning the BMW Audio Books

Hi,

I finally was able to burn the BMW Audio Books to a CD that plays in my Professional Radio (non iDrive). I noticed that the bit rate was less than 44.1Kbps on all of the files. So, even though the files say "MP3" from BMW, I converted tham to MP3 using iTunes. I also set the ID3 tag to version 1.0 as a previous response suggested.

Well everthing works correctly. I went back and downloaded the books form BMW again and noticed some differences. I still converted everyone over using iTunes.
