WTF is going on with the exotics?
Yesterday, middle of the day - I'm waiting at a light in McLean. Driving the minivan . I'm first in line at my light and I see what I believe to be a yellow Porsche Carrera GT turn onto the road a block ahead of me. My light turned green and I sped up a bit to catch up and see. The Carrera GT is up ahead, waiting at another light, so I catch up and see that indeed, it is a yellow Carrera GT. Appears to be brand new. For those who know the area, this was at the corner of Rte 123 and Old Dominion in McLean, headed toward Great Falls. For those who don't know the Carrera GT, it looks like this: http://www.sporthausinc.com/cars/por...%20(WinCE).JPG
This is my second Carrera GT sighting in this general area. I didn't even think they were street legal. About 6 months ago, I saw one about a half mile from this same location, so it could be the same car. When it took off at the light, and the guy didn't "take off" or anything, he was driving normally, but its exhaust note sounded sort of odd. I think it's fair to say it sounded like a race car sitting at the light, but once it got going, there was a point in the RPM band where there was a distinct hum/resonance I could actually feel in my car behind him. I heard it twice. Like a music note hum, not a growly sound. Seriously, at first I thought my wheel was rubbing on the wheel well or something(!) but then I realized it was his engine making that noise. Very strange and I've never heard that from any other car. Today, driving to work - I approach Great Falls Road on Rte 123 (this is where I saw a Carrera GT about 6 months ago, BTW) and I see an exotic looking bright yellow car waiting in the line of cars as I approach. I'll be stopping right behind him, and my first thought is "Wow! What are the chances I see that Porsche on the way to work, too!" But as I approached, I could see this one was a yellow Lamborghini Gallardo. Also looked to be brand new. Looked exactly like this one: http://www.marax.at/snapshot/03_10_0...o_velden_5.jpg Damn, and I thought my E90 was nice.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it. Both bright yellow, too. As you know, you see some nice cars around here, but usually "nice" means $75-80K old man car, not $400K or whatever sport coupe.
The reason I linked to that photo of the Gallardo was because that was the view I had of it. I found myself amazed at how the rear window of that thing is tiny. I wonder how the visibility is out the rear of that car. Not that you'd need to be looking behind you too often.

Move to Ashburn... I live 3 miles from the Ferrari/Lambo/Maserati Dealership
My sightings in the area include: Lambo LP640 Lambo Gallardo (atleast 5 of them or so) Ferrari 612 Ferrari F430 (about another 5 or so) Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano Ferrari 360 Porsche CGT A few Maserati Quattraporte's and Grand Sports Even though I see them more often than others, Im still quite giddy when I see one on the road... |

"WTF is going on with the exotics?"
Well, BK, it is Mclean, after all! I used to commute to Georgetown every day via Canal Road (in my MR2--one of the best cars I've every owned, BTW) and I'd often see a guy in a red Testa Rosa creeping his way along in bumper to bumper traffic. I bet that puppy overheated a time or two. "Damn, and I thought my E90 was nice." It IS nice. The more I drive my 328 the more I respect the car. (I know I'm preaching to the choir, here.) I've got buddies with exotics that are garage queens, either because the cars don't work or because they're afraid to actually drive the car. Our e90s manage to be both practical and lots of fun to drive. I'll take that every time. |

Also, keep in mind that we live in one of the richests areas in the nation. I think Loudoun county was actually the richest county in the U.S. this past year based on per capita income. Fairfax is always in the top 10. Damn cost of living! |

And cycler2 - you're right, you're preaching to the choir here. I my car and driving is the best part of my day (well, actually a distant second-best to playing with my son in the morning and evening ). I couldn't ask for a better daily driver than my 330i, but I want the keys to one of those exotics for weekends. I wonder if they can fit a baby seat?

I drove a Lotus Elise last week! 10k rpm redline, except it didn't really have a redline! When I retire, it's either a nice Porsche, or Ferrari. I can't stand Lambos--they're audi TT's with big engines! hahahaha

The dealership is literally right next to carmax. Im surprised you didnt stop by... now you know... Technically, that is considered Sterling/Dulles, but it is seconds from where I am in Ashburn. Plus, you see a lot of those cars in Ashburn coming from the dealership... |

I grew up in SE Virginia thinking that nobody REALLY ever got to own/drive that level of automobile exotica, but then I moved to S Fla and lived in Miami Beach and worked in downtown Coral Gables in the 90s..... and the street was literally always lined with Ferraris, Lambos, stunning classics and any other 100k++ vehicle you can imagine. It was unnerving, especially since in that era I drove a dented Toyota lol.....

0-60 in 2.5 seconds... 0-255mph in 55 seconds. So fast that according to Jeremy Clarkson on BBC: "It's so fast, that if you took a McLaren F1, and let it get to 125mph from a light, and then started the Bugatti at that same light, the Bugatti would get to 200mph first." Tom |
