Buying Lease - CPO costs?

Hey guys, its amazing how fast 3 years flies by! Well, I've made up my mind and decided I do want to purchase my car at the end of my lease.

However, apparently there are some "odd" costs associated with CPOing a car (or so I've been told) and I just wanted to see if you guys might know if they're legit or not. Here goes:

Residual Cost of Car: $23,575.00
CPO offered: $1,260.00
Total: $24,835.00

And then...
--Mandatory 4 New "BMW spec" Run Flat Tires
--Brake pads must be greater than 4"
--Wheels must be immaculate (no dents/curb rash/cracks/etc)
--Associated "various" shop costs

Total price offered to me: $28,085.00

To be fair to him, he did tell me he over-estimated the shop costs when I inquired about the difference. I'm bringing my car in for the pre-CPO inspection Monday morning in which I'll get an actual quote for the "various" shop costs and whether I'll need to pay for wheel repair, brake pads, etc.

My car runs like it was new and only has 26k miles, I just don't see how it could need an extra $3,000.00 worth of shop costs to bring up to spec, especially if its still under warranty.

Assuming my wheels/brake pads are fine (I do need RF's), does this sound like a fair offer? Any advice/feedback would be truly appreciated!

Hmm, I don't see the $3,200 in extra costs. First off, it does cost extra to get it CPO'd, you'd have to search out to see what other people are paying to get theirs done. If the dealer is paying for the RF's then that will be expensive, could be $4-500 a tire which will add to the cost so ask him for the complete breakdown of the cost instead of just putting "various" costs. Good luck.

You probably meant 4mm on brake pads as min.
But brake pads should be covered by free-maintenance. Unless BMW find a loophole to screw you, like to get replacement brake the pads have to be less than 3mm but for lease return min is 4mm. Doubt it.

Yeah, I should know more on Monday as to what the extra fees are for the "shop costs." He did just say it was an estimate and expects them to come back with a lower number, just wonder if it'll be significantly lower or not. Thing is, he said that all "shop purchases" are done "at cost" so he can only give me the total, and not a complete breakdown of each individual item. For example, if the shop comes back and says the car needs $2,000 worth of work, he can provide and invoice showing everything that needs to be done, but it won't be itemized, such as $1000 for new tires, $500 for brakes, etc. :

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, at 4" I imagine those things would last forever.

He said that under 3mm they are covered under the warranty, but if they're under 4mm and over 3mm then that cost is passed on to me! When I got home, I thought about it some more and it seems absolutely rediculous. I'm a moral person so I won't do it, but what's to stop me from going to the track and doing 60-0 brake distance checks to get my pads at less than 3mm?!

Yup, straight from the dealer. I'm looking to finance the rest of the balance and get CPO'd for the warranty so I don't think going straight through BMWNA is an option for me.

Would you not consider just installing the tires before hand at a third party shop. As long as they are the same you should save a few hundred.

You got it, already priced out the Bridgestone Potenza RE0-50A RFT's, I'm looking at $1317.30 shipped. Figure an extra $115 for mount & balance, looking at about $1425.00 on my own. I'll see what the dealer thinks about that on Monday.

I'm also bringing in my E92 this month. To CPO the car and buy it would have cost me $1900, assuming that it passed inspection, which it would do easily.
For that $1900 I would get a full warranty for 3 years. Since it has two years remaining on the original warranty, that means I would pay $1900 for another year.
What I'm doing, and, I believe, you should too, is pass on the CPO option. This avoids the inspection and you buy the car from the dealer, as is. But talk to your lease specialist about this. You probably have some payments made on the front end of the lease which can be applied against the purchase price. Again, talk to the dealer.

Doesn't Certifying the car extend the warranty two additional years beyond the original warranty?
