After all the issues.. wait for 2nd year 335i?
I really plan on buying E93 335i hardtop cabrio. I do plan on modding it slightly as usual.
I also count on Vishnu or any aftermarket ECU tuning for that little extra kick. Whats really holdig my back right now, is the over-heating issues. I know its not happening to everyone, but considering all the reports made by E90POST members here, I will have to say, 335i does have issues. Whether its only for the "few" or not, I don't want to take any chances here. If I decide to go for E93, she'll stay with me for at least couple of years. I need her to be reliable, even with slight tuning. After reading all the 335i trouble threads, car seems nearly fragile. I can only imagine people reporting even more problems when engine tuning begins. If the main problem with the 335i was something like faulty o2 sensor or something, it would've been easier.. but over heating in general is definitely not a good sign for a turbo car. Do you think it is a wise choice to just wait for 2nd year production 335i or just get the car, enjoy, and wait for possible recall later?

If you plan on getting a cabrio model, you're already getting a second year car anyway (as far as drivetrain goes) so why fret? There really is no "wise" decision, just make up your mind to wait or buy. Simple really, right? I chose now and am not going to worry about what a bunch of people on the internet think or over hype plus i'm not going to drive this car like a moron.

If I do mod, my warranty won't be valid. If any overheating issue comes up and my engine blows, there goes my car.

i thought that the "overheating issue" was fake. Is there and issue or not?

I'm also in the same boat as you are. I really want the 335i sedan, but there is a part of me that says to wait for a 2nd year production at least.

The only overheating issue that stands out was from the Audi forums. And another was from a guy (on this forum) that, IIRC, got an overheating issue because the factory left it in Transport/Transit Mode. Other than those I don't think there were any other issues. Vishnu's current posts confirm that the ECU update reduced power slightly but nothing too noticeable, though I don't think this qualifies as a first-year model issue to be worried about.

It became a reality when several e90post 335i owners reported overheating issues. Some even went to the dealership and found out that its a faulty sensor or something. I remember seeing more than one thread from different 335i owners in e90post, thats why Im worried about this. Correct me if im wrong, but one of the member blew their 335i engine already or something, and bmw is taking care of him in a good manner.

But these are all just spread out incidents, not everyone has these probs. If you can hold out for year 2 production then do it. You'd get all the bug fixes and maybe an extra chrome trim piece will be added to the volume knob hehe j/k

Mine is still going strong... and i mean STRONG... (hard break-in)... i put 600 miles on her this weekend... hours and hours of driving, flooring it up hills, and through twisties, and the hottest it got was 240 on the oil temp.

When the e60 M5 came out, there were immediate reports of an oil line failure. The lines were redesigned and backordered. Now everyone is complaining of the SMG's failing. Can you just imagine buying a $90K and that stuff happening. Hell, the e39 M5 has vanos issues. That doesn't surface for 50K+ miles. I'm sure there's more to come with the e90. BMW quality control seems a bit lacking as they are trying to push things the boundries and are too quick to market.

Most of the problems you are talking about are fairly isolated cases.
That being said, history has proven that first yr. cars generally have more bugs than later models after "bugs" have been worked out. However, with ECU controlled cars most "bugs" are worked out with reflashes and software updates. I dont forsee any long term problems with the first year 335 that would make waiting worthwhile. Now if your like me and want to see a fulle Mtech 335 then waiting will probably be worth it... Jason
