E90 / E92: CPO necessary?
Hey everyone,
I'm currently in the market for a 2006+ E90 Sedan or a 2007+ E92 Coupe and I've just been wondering about the Certified Pre-Owned option. My budget is about $22,000 and I'm looking for a car with under 40,000 miles on it. Although that may sound ridiculous, you can find cars in that general range. Here's my dilemma: I can buy an E92 without a CPO. I love the E92, it's really what I want. Or, I can buy an E90 with a CPO. It'd still be a fun car, but nothing like the E92. How necessary is the CPO? Also, is there any way that I could buy the E92 and somehow purchase an extended warranty? Do I even need to worry about a warranty to begin with? All help is appreciated! Please don't laugh at my price range, I'm 17. Thanks, Gotadime

I'd get CPO, BMW's are expensive to maintain out of warranty.

You should either get a CPO, OR you can put an extra $4k in a bank account and use it if/when you need it. The naturally aspirated cars MT like 325i and 330i are the most reliable. I got a good deal on a "previously CPO'ed" car... you might have luck finding one if you are good at running searches on autotrader, cars.com and ebay. The big difference is that a previously CPOed car will have a warranty, but it will not protect you against damage inflicted by a previous owner, like if he hit something and had the car repaired poorly. You might want to save that 22k for an education though, and buy an old car. |

Thanks for the advice, I'm definitely liking the idea of a 330i. But I can hardly resist the 328i coupe as well, lol. And don't worry about the education, I'm going to a College Prep School right now and I've got scholarships to handle paying for university expenses.

About warranty though, CPO is great, but the N52 doesn't have huge issues like fuel pumps, injectors, etc. I would go for it if you're not loosing too much money, but I rather just save up the money and replace things when needed.

Hey, do what you want, just remember, that few thousand you save now on a non-CPO could cost you 10 times that if you are familiar with BMW and their maintenance, just a thought.

The problem with the 4k is you will still feel the pain when you need 3k of work. I like the idea of the BMW extended warranty because you have to strive to get that money, and once you do, set it and forget it. I never purchased any extended warranty in my entire life. But my car is still under warranty and I already know how painful it is to get this thing repaired. I cannot even imagine what it feels like to pull into the dealer and 4 days later go to pick up your car and wonder what the $$$ will be. |

Now that's a scare. That's only when you get really high in mileage or if you have the N54. As long as a mechanic checks out the car it should be good.

When I was 17, or even 20 for that matter, I didn't care about what something costs. I could either have it, or not, no analysis needed. And I certainly lived for the moment. I think you're right, the OP is 17, after all. He has his entire career ahead of him, even if he lost say 10k, he can easily earn it back. In other words, playing the odds is just fine.

You guys all have really good points. I'll think about this for a while, but I think that I might go with a non-CPO E90 or E92, just from what I've read about them. I think that a non-CPO 2007 E92 coupe with 25,000 miles on it should be a safe bet. But I'm not decided yet.

As for whether to buy it or not - I dont know your financial situation, but 50k in a high yeild mutual fund will literally be over a million dollars by the time you retire. You will live your life much better off financially if you always operate in the black. That said... They are irresistible. No one will blame you :-) |

You're not going to find a decent 335 that hasn't been abused in your price range. So I'm assuming you're talling 325, 328, maybe a 330.
You should probably buy a civic. |

Go the CPO route if you can, but like JayKay said, you probably wont find a decent E92 335i for $22,000.
If I had $22,000, I'd get a relatively low mileage 330i or CPO'ed E90 335i (if one exists in that price range). |

I'm looking at 328i Coupes and 330i Sedans. The 335i's have too many reported problems for me to deal with anyway. And I'd want to kill myself if I drove a civic, lol.
