Hit and run

So long story short, I merge into the left lane and a second later i feel a bump on the back left rear of my car and sure enough someone hit me and as I try to pull off the road, he follows and then guns it and gets off the freeway. I just want to know how much in damages I'm looking at. I thought at first it was just the paint but there are deep gashes that I don't think a paint job alone would fix =/ I haven't reported anything to insurance yet though but I did get 6 out of the 7 license plate numbers and make...any advice? How much in damages am I looking at? Thanks...

p.s sorry for the dirty car

File a police report. They will easily find out who it was given that much of the plate number as well as the make/model/color. Then make sure that your insurance gets the police report info. They'll pursue it and you won't have to pay the deductible out of pocket.

+1....with 6 out of 7 numbers, they'll find out whos car it was. problem is trying to prove who was driving the car at that time.

It will be costly, but since you have nearly all of the license number, the first step is to file a police report.

Why would it be a problem to prove who was driving the car? It is the responsibility of the owner to tell the police who was driving the car, unless the owner had filed a police report that his car was stolen before the time of the accident.

Could it be possible that you didn't see him and left him know where to go so he barely hit you? That's the excuse I'd use if I were him. Also it looks like just his tire rubbed your bumper, he may not have thought any damage was done.

Or he's probably an illegal and took off...

My daughter was rear-ended and the jerk took off. She called the cops and they told her she needed the complete license plate number, not just a partial. So the guy got away with it. She even had a good description of the car and the driver.

I used to watch a lot of Law and Order and CSI, on the shows they use computers that can take partial numbers and come up with registrations. Not sure why they can't do that in real life.

Umm what do you mean?

There are gashes into the actual bumper, not just the paint. Can you buff that out like smooth it and then paint over it?

that site's products look like garbage imo..read the fine print on the side for that bumper and its telling you about necessary modifications you have to make in order for it to fit etc..
