To my knowledge, only some Toyotas have break pedals. All others have brakes. Sorry, couldn't resist.

that happens when you have the engine off and you pump the brake pedal, it gets stiffer and stiffer and then loosens once you start the engine again.

If that's not the reason its happening to you, then i dont know what it is. Maybe get it checked

There is a valve in the system that is defective. There is a bulletin out on fixing it/replacing it under warranty for that problem. I believe it has something to do with leaking fluid back into the system and causing the pedal to become hard while the car is turned off. Take it to the dealer if it bothers you or just wait till your next service and mention it.

There is a check valve in the brake boost system that is supposed to retain vacuum after the engine is shut off, so you won't have a hard brake pedal. If this valve starts leaking, your symptom is the result.

A lot of people just ignore it, but you can get the valve and/or brake booster (sometimes the problem, too) repaired under warranty if it bothers you.

yeah it's the brake booster, I just ignore mine. I always forget to mention it when I take in it for service.

Intake, yes -- but how are you going to take off the exhaust and coilovers everytime it needs to go in for service? Just isn't practical, I wouldn't think.

I didn't take off my DCI when I went in for service last year, they were gonna change my intake filter, but told me that I have two "cannons" in there already, so they just gave me the filter itself. Nothing happened, maybe it's just for this dealer.

This is a brake booster problem. BMW has to replace the vacuum pump assembly. Let me find the TSB.

Here is the SIB:
http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B340607g.htm

I printed this out last week and brought it into the dealer.

The interesting thing is that they replaced the part again (my 2nd time) and still found noticeable issues. They compared with another car and mine seemed different. So they replaced it with another new vacuum pump and now it seems fine.
