335i dealer replacing turbos

Hi All

I purchased a 335i E92 SE 56 plate 4 weeks ago and have been experiencing some exhaust rattle. Put the car in to the dealer and it was diagnosed as the dreaded wastegate issue.

They advised that i would need to replace both turbos to rectify the problem and that this was going to be a near £4k job. My car is out of its 3 year warranty by 3 months so as you can imagine i was a concerned to say the least.

I was aware of the wastegate issue and asked the dealer to submit a goodwill request to BMW UK. They have been more than fair and agreed to cover 100%of the parts and 80 % cost of the labour which is fantastic.

After reading more about the wastegate issue's on the internet over the last few days i suspect that my car has at some point had the Puma stage one fix which is a software upgrade that holds the wastegates open up to around 3'000 rpm. I suspect this as the car had noticeable turbo lag, a very loud exhaust, rough idle and popping from the exhaust when coming of the throttle in 1st gear.

The car has gone in today to have the new turbos fitted and my concern is that when the new turbos are fitted they will not adjust the software to ensure that the wastegates are closed rather than artificially left open. I have put this to the service guy and he said that the Turbos would be fitted and the necessary software updated. I kinda just got the impression that he was trying to get me off the phone. He did confirm however that the new turbos are the latest new and improved editions.

Has anyone had this problem and had the turbos replaced because of it?? Did the car come back lag free with normal idle and normal exhaust tone? I’m concerned that the car will comeback with new turbos but old software that keeps the wastegates open.

Am I worrying to much or do I need to be pushing the dealer to ensure the car gets the correct software upgrade for the new turbos?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Howard

Honestly never heard of the turbos being replaced for wastegate rattle. I've always been told that's the way it is and you just have to live with it.

I met a guy at the gym who said his turbos were replaced under warranty and he was given the "laggy" software and his mpgs went down the tubes, as well as his car being slower.

BUT, that was over a year ago, and as far as we all know, laggy software is a thing of the past. Just ask the SA for the software version and then see if it's the latest, which is 36.1 or E89x-09-12-512, right?

I wonder if we are lucky if our 335's don't need repairs under warranty (which we can't control)? Turbos have got to be remanuf not new, right (like starters, alternators, calipers, etc.)? I believe that remanuf parts vary greatly in quality. I put two new calipers on my Nissan. A month later one rusted as if it were 10 years old., and the other only mildly. Both came from the same auto parts store and same "premium" line....

Hi guys... Yes I was very lucky for them to make such a masive contribution!!!

Thank you also john for the coments. So is laggy software now been ditched??? It seems as though they might be replacing the hardware as 1st choice now as they have probably learned from the countless complaints about the laggy software.

Would everyone agree with this??

Hey if it comes back with turbo lag just get your car the Jb1 software and that should cure any lag and increase performance.

My car was in today for a rattle. The dealer just called me back. The rattle was a loose wire harness in the stearing column. Dummy's didn't put my stearing wheel back together correctly when they fixed my heated stearing wheel 2 weeks ago....

First I'm clueless about cars. I bought my 335i a month ago because I had the same rattle noice problem. I brought it in yesterday and the SA called me in the after saying that they're gonna replace the turbo. Luckily, mine is still under warranty.
