Key Fob

How much does it cost to get a new key done? Also, I have a keyfob can I get it programmed to be used on my car?

I don't think they can program an old keyfob at the dealer. When I bought my E92 the dealer ordered me a new key from Germany and it came pre programed.

I think a new key is just under $300.

If you find a new FOB with a uncut internal key, what would BMW charge to activate it an cut the key? I bought a used 07 and only have 1 key so I am looking for a spare. Not really looking to spend 300 though. I found a key online a lot cheaper than that but it would need to be programmed and cut.

Thanks

Price depends on whether or not you have CA. But it will be somewhere between $300ish (maybe just under) and $500 (with CA).

After doing some more reading, it would appear that a used key cannot be reprogrammed. I have seen used FOBs with uncut keys though. How is this possible?

I bought a used one off ebay for $15 bucks, mainly because mine was missing the roundel emblem. While at the dealer on an unrelated issue, I asked if the other one could be activated. He emphatically said "NO". He may have been blowing smoke, but he claimed that the code in the remote is unique to the car and there is no way to "register" the code in the remote with any other car but the one it was built for. When you order a new one, they basically burn the code for your car into the new one based on your VIN and once "burned" they cannot be changed.

Caveat Emptor. The ones on ebay may claim that they can be activated, but my research says no. It was worth the $15 for the emblem to me though (popped it off and re-glued it to my functioning FOB).

Your dealer was correct, not bluffing..

They cost nearly $400.

I can confirm that what you dealer said was correct. The keys have to be ordered from Germany (?), and come preprogrammed. Each car can be controlled by several keys, I think it is up to four for a 330(x)i with the CA (it may be different for a 335(x)i). If one of the keys fails and is replaced, the dealer can erase the failed key's recognition signature from the car's software, but cannot re-program the key itself. If the keys available on e-bay could be easily programmed to open any car, we would see reports on stolen BMWs on the forum.

Need to replace a lost key fob for our e91.

This was an old post, so if any more recent info on how best to get a new key fob please post away!

I believe it's still get to dealer for new one, with verified ownership of car. That would seem to make sense.

Sounds good. I'm going to the dealer. I could already have a new fob for all the locksmiths I have called. Damn kids. Lol. I can't figure out how they are doing it.

A caveat is, some dealerships are total rip offs. I called one, and was quoted $425.00 for a 2008 E90 key/fob without comfort acces.
