I don't think they can program an old keyfob at the dealer. When I bought my E92 the dealer ordered me a new key from Germany and it came pre programed.
I think a new key is just under $300. |

If you find a new FOB with a uncut internal key, what would BMW charge to activate it an cut the key? I bought a used 07 and only have 1 key so I am looking for a spare. Not really looking to spend 300 though. I found a key online a lot cheaper than that but it would need to be programmed and cut.

Price depends on whether or not you have CA. But it will be somewhere between $300ish (maybe just under) and $500 (with CA).

I bought a used one off ebay for $15 bucks, mainly because mine was missing the roundel emblem. While at the dealer on an unrelated issue, I asked if the other one could be activated. He emphatically said "NO". He may have been blowing smoke, but he claimed that the code in the remote is unique to the car and there is no way to "register" the code in the remote with any other car but the one it was built for. When you order a new one, they basically burn the code for your car into the new one based on your VIN and once "burned" they cannot be changed.
Caveat Emptor. The ones on ebay may claim that they can be activated, but my research says no. It was worth the $15 for the emblem to me though (popped it off and re-glued it to my functioning FOB). |

This was an old post, so if any more recent info on how best to get a new key fob please post away! I believe it's still get to dealer for new one, with verified ownership of car. That would seem to make sense. |

A caveat is, some dealerships are total rip offs. I called one, and was quoted $425.00 for a 2008 E90 key/fob without comfort acces.
