Thinking of Trading my E90 for a VW GLI

I'm thinking of trading in my E90 for a 06 GLI. I'm looking to downsize financially. Long story short...I have an opportunity to get into some excellent investment properties next year and want to reduce my debt.

I've had my car for sale for a few months and have gotten some interest. I was selling my car at my payoff which was $33,500. I had 2 buyers that could not get financing so now I'm thinking about just trading it in. I'm tired to responding to the ads. Even at my asking price, which I think is a great price for a 2006 with 14k miles, they still low ball you with $28k - 29K. I'm going to the dealer this morning to see what kind of deal they can work out.

I feel your pain

I was constantly being lowballed when trying to sell my wife's MB C320 coupe, even though I was offering it at $1K below the lowest 'good condition' private party book value (excellent condition, clean carfax). I ended up taking the car to Carmax, and they gave me $1K over the KBB 'good condition' value, which was more than any private party was offering me. Good luck, and try Carmax if you have one nearby.

I tried to trade my CLK 55 for a GLI at one point--the new GLI is a great car for the money. If I were 'downgrading' from a 3 series, it would be my only choice.

My asking price is $1300 over the Fair price in KBB. Trade in value for good is at $32500, let's see what VW will offer.

I assume you are using autotrader to sell your car? It generally works pretty well, although anytime you sell anything to the general public, a lot of people are just off the wall with offers they will make.

Best of luck, and good luck with your investments!

I am selling my 2003 Jetta GLI VR6 6MT with only 28k miles on it. It still looks brand new and I've done some tasteful mods too. Since you are only in NH, I would be willing to drive it out to you if you are interested. I have a few test drives scheduled so please let me know if you want to get more information. Good luck!

I sold my wife's Camry in one hour after i posted up the classified on autotrader.
Lol guy offered $2k over KBB value. Right now trying to sell the Maxima to make room for a new car. 2002 black on black auto fully loaded with everything except navi flawless condition $2k alpine audio system 38k miles for $15k is a great deal being 200 under KBB value with an expensive audio system intact (it looks factory everythings mounted). People offer like $10k for it I'm like "wtf?".

Good luck on your wise decision Cloud9

I think he either means a VW Jetta GLI or a VW GTI. The GTI is a VW model, the GLI is a trim option for the Jetta - it's kinda like saying BMW 335 ZSP.

I test drove a '06 GLI when I was shopping back in June, before I got my e90. It's a fun car to drive. If I were younger, and wanted to spend less money, it would definitely be a car I would enjoy driving on a daily basis.

You're probably better off just keeping your car so you don't lose anything and just holding onto it for a good long time. Unless you really need money right now.

I definitely think you get more selling to a private party for BMW's, but timing is everything. I put my e46 on Autotrader & didn't get too much activity...I ended up trading it in where I know I got ripped off..

'02 325ci, sparkling graphite, black/silver interior, premium, sport, step, xenon, harmon hardon, Sirius(aftermarket), 97,000 miles = $12,000 trade in.

x2

I tested an '06 GLI before I bought a 330i. It's a great car for the price. It has a lot of the little features that make a BMW so enjoyable, like auto up-down windows with pinch protection for every window, xenon lights, rain sensing wipers, auto dimming mirrors, an outstanding dual-clutch DSG transmission, a direct inject turbo 4-cyl with good passing power, etc. It's not an E90, but it's an incredible value.

Reliability would be my only concern, based on others' experience and magazine reviews. Based on my own personal experience with 3 Jettas in the past (including the excellent VR6 that klaxian is selling -- you should test drive it), I have had zero problems... so I guess it's a little bit of a roll of the dice. Of course, BMW is the same way. I have no problems, but you read of others having problem after problem with their cars.

you lose money on every car deal you do,

the money you'd lose selling/trading your car plus the extra depreciation hit of another new car may very well eat up a large portion of the money you're "saving" by downgrading to a VW

keep what you've got

amen to that. BTW, what the hell are people who can't get financing doing trying to buy a car -- a BMW at that. seriously, sometimes I read some posts and wonder what the hell is going on with the world. There was some kid who posted that his parents are in debt big time, but they all scraped together so he could have his 325i.

I don't know how anyone think they're saving money buy doing what the OP is suggesting. Unless you buy a Kia Rio, then yes, you'll be 'saving' money.

You could take less of a depreciation hit by buying a used car. Although ward is right, he is better off keeping what he has.
