Connect laptop with Car

I was attempting to connect a laptop with a 09 plate BMW 3 series, hoping to use the modem (im assuming theres a modem since the car can make calls and connect to the online services without a phone connected?) to browse the internet from the laptop, i got to a point but didnt have enough time to get it working.

Just wondering if anyone has done this or is there some restriction somewhere, ill try again but in case someone has already tried this?

Thanks

I believe that the car includes a secondary GSM phone, which calls a BMW service. I don't think you could connect anything else to that service and would have to figure out how to get the car to make the call. I certainly don't think it's 'always on'.

With a gprs connection its going to be slow even if you did 'hack' into it. It takes a while to do a simple google search on the connected drive.

My guess its a one trick pony system just connecting to BMW directly when needed for an emergency call, BMW assist or connected drive when stationary.

A 3G dongle would be far easier
