Cracked collar hex nuts on Stut brace?

Has anyone else experienced cracking of the collared hex nuts used to secure the factory strut brace to the shock towers?

Note these are different than the stock shouldered (one-time-use) hex nuts that secure the strut bolts when a strut tower brace is not used. The collared nuts used with the brace are re-usable, include a locktite coating on the threads, have a hexagonal top segment, a flared shoulder, then an additional sleeve about 8mm at the bottom which fits into matching holes in the STB.

I have somehow managed to crack three of the six nuts in abut 12,000 miles. and they split vertically, right through the hexagonal section of the part.

Replacing these buggers is EXPENSIVE, retail cost is now $14.00 EACH. Wholesale cost is about $8.00 though a garage.

Anyone have any ideas as to why these things split on me?

regards

RC

I don't think they were over-torqued, 35Nm and 41 Nm for the strut brace and firewall brace nuts, respectively.

I think the nut sheared somehow, but I would have thought the bolt would have gone first....
