May be a total loss

Ok as some of you may know my car recently went over a flatbed hitch or something of the sort(look up old post). Well just got a call from the adjuster today and she said depending on on her report that she will be turning in, they will either fix it or consider my car a total loss Im really praying that it isnt.

Reason is they are going to most likely have to change the motor as well. But there not sure yet.

Question though, if they do consider it a loss, and only give me what its worth, will they go by kbb or how much it is going for? Also can i take some of the things i bought off? Such as my CSL's and CF M3 hood?

This blows big cojones

Sorry for the rant

I don't know much about the back story, but I think a total loss is far preferable to a car with major repair work done up by a dealership...

I remember the story. I'm amazed at the level of damage. Anyway, in a past car (not BMW), KBB was around 7k, I couldn't get 6 when I tried to sell it, and the person who hit it had their insurance pay out around 9500. Not quite sure why it appraised so high but I didn't question it. My guess is that it's because the guy was caught driving drunk, so they wanted to avoid a lawsuit. I didn't have anything aftermarket on the car though to pull off other than taillights, which they let me pull since I put the stocks back on. I don't see why they wouldn't let you switch back to stock parts, unless they valued your car higher for aftermarket stuff on it (which should value lower, not higher, so it's unlikely).

Personally I agree with Rando about driving around in a car that's been wrecked. Sometimes it really does drive the same again, sometimes not, but it seems people have more problems with a vehicle after a wreck most times.

I hope it gets totaled for you. you will not be happy if it gets fixed, small little things will sound wierd, be uneven, etc.

Was suppose to be fixed but since the engine might of got F'd since all the oil ran out, might be better to just give me what its worth according to them

This makes me scared I just got the estimate for my car that was hit by the 18 wheeler. I'm hoping it won't be too bad since it's mainly cosmetics. I'm really curious what your estimate to repair comes out to be. Makes me wonder where they draw the line for totaling or repair

And on another note did you ever get that screen for your laptop fixed?

Start making copies of receipts for your mods. Otherwise if they total it they'll go by OEM value only. It might be a fight, but honestly I think it's better than having a rebuilt car. I trust the BMW robots more than a shop guy.

If you can find a car in the interim, I'd say go for European Delivery, it's the best!

Pay attention to the 'receipts for your mods'.

You might also want to check the NADA value of your car-- sometimes, it's actually higher than kbb by a $1000 or more. The link to nada is below. Good luck.

WOW,

I remeber the past thread, all this over a tie down for a semi

I guess the block was cracked or damaged which would require a replacement.
I cant see it being a total... but whatever.

Good luck man and keep us posted !

ppp

p.s. my wife totaled the hyundai and the insurance (allstate) was very generous with the payout = no problems

I had my 2006 Acura TSX totaled back in March 2007 and they wouldn't give me a penny over the NADA guide value. KBB was about 2 grand more than NADA guide and I pleaded my case but they said they couldn't find a similar car (w/ 6MT) in the area, so they couldn't assess the actual going rate of the car and the only option was to go by the NADA guide value.

I totaled a G35 coupe when I was younger; insurance gave me 38K, and although I don't remember how much it's rated value was, I do remember that I was thinking about asking 30K for it. So as far as I remember, my insurance was actually quite generous.

In this case, you should compare how much the insurance is offering you to how much it would cost to repair. In my opinion, it's always better to get the new car over a patched up one, even if it comes out to be a little more expensive.

If it is not totalled, there is diminished value to consider. I was hit two years ago by a red light runner in a new IS350. Nearly totalled my car. Was offered 3k for diminished value. I had it appraised and he said closer to 9k in diminished value. Went to a 3rd party umpire and he sided with my appraiser. Research it via google. Each state is different.

I thought if the frame is damaged or if it exceeds 50% of the value, it is totaled....I could be wrong though...

You usually will get the Retail Price for the car, not trade-in or private party.

I am a bit suprised they would call that a total loss. The body you described seems untouched. The drivetrain parts can't cost that much to call it a total loss.
