Sparkplug Socket at Sears

For all of us backyard, shade tree mechanics, here is the link to Sears Online Store. All of you real mechanics already have one of these. It is a 14mm, 3/8" drive, deep well, 6 point, thin wall, socket. The price, $5.09 plus shipping is the lowest I remember seeing. So mine is bought and payed for, and on it's way thru UPS.

Most spark plugs are STANDARDIZED regardless of make and model of the car. If BMW provides a 12 point socket it may only have been for ease of use.

What is more important, is if the socket in the link has one of those rubber pucks at the base of the socket specifically to grab the top of the spark plug for ease of retrieval. Looks to be a regular thin-wall socket, not a spark plug socket.

These are what you typically see/use for spark plug removal. Only when in a pinch would a deep wall socket like OP posted be needed.

the 6 point socket (just like the plug itself) will work just fine.
but they have a 12 point too, if thats what you want. it's $5.94.

The best thing about sparkplug sockets is when they grip the sparkplug better than they grip your 3/8" extension and get lodged in your cylinder head. Ahhh, good times. Especially when it's in my subaru and the spark plugs are wedged in from the side.

excellent point. i'm sorry they tack on the extra cost to stick in a round piece rubber w/ a hole in it. but you are so right. it's a must have when your changing plugs. and yeah, that Subaru boxer engine. might be easier to turn the engine upside down.

if the socket i ordered doesn't have the rubber in the end i'll attempt to pull one of the rubber pieces out of one of the extra plug sockets i have.

Man, shipping is more than the product itself. 12.19 pre tax, and tax here will push it to 13. Bye bye savings. Cool though, if it weren't for shipping here, and with that kind of thing YMMV.

this is what the plugs look like on the N54... will a 6 point fit properly?

i went out and got the 12 point sparkplug socket since i didnt have a thinwall in the right size, havent gotten around to changing them yet.
