It's a 94R group size. Diehard and Everstart (maybe others too) have a compatible battery - is there any reason this wouldn't work?
Should run you about $115, I think the dealer charges $160 for an OEM replacement.

There's no reason it wouldn't work. Even if you bought a huge one that didn't fit, you can put it in the trunk and run it with a long wire... people do that in the 350Z to help distribute the weight.

NTB has the battery, i know a few people that has got this one. id recommend the dealership since i heard from a bmw tech that the e90 power module (red thing on top of battery) is made for that specific battery and other batteries may not be compatible with

e90 already has the battery in the trunk. just get something locally. Most have a 5 year warranty now anyway.

Battery warranties are very misleading, good luck trying to get one for free. I did at Autozone and finally gave up and paid full price for a Die Hard on my Nissan. Kinda interesting how I bought the battery for $57, the price went up to $93, and with the pro rata (even with an 84 mo. warranty) a Die Hard was less out of pocket $$$. Total BS. With the BMW, I'd rather go OEM. Don't believe in the "I'll make it fit" way of thinking. People often make the Optimas and Exide Orbitals fit into their cars. Why not just get one that really fits?

It's a freaking battery. They all put out ~12V. There's nothing electrically special about the factory battery. Only issue with aftermarket is they might not be the "perfect/identical" size, but from this thread on m3post, it looks like there are several holes to mount the hold down bracket, so it can accommodate different sized batteries. You should just try to aim for the same CCA, if not higher.

I do not know about the best deal in your area, but I have found that the original battery is nothing special, except for its relatively large size. Any reasonable car parts store will have a unit that fits, at a cost lower than the OEM unit.
