I am wondering the same thing.. size, brand etc?? And runflats aren't necessary, are they? The dealership says they are, but I dont buy that.

Is Steelcase tires (woodbine/steeles area) a good place to go for winters?

[I bought winter tires there for my previous car and was happy with everything there except the ridiculously long lineups..(I was there at 6am on a saturday to get my winters installed, and there were already 5 or 6 cars ahead of me, and the place wasn't even open.. unreal!! By the time the opened, the lineup of cars was down the street..]

This is my snow setup from Tirerack. Wheels are Kosei K3 and Blizzak LM25. Square setup 235/40/18. Enjoy!

I also run the Blizzak LM 25. Non-staggered as well. I don't believe you need to be using runflats either. Got em from Tire Rack!

ello ello and welcome to the forum.

there are many choices out there and it all comes down to what you want. if you plan on getting summer wheels and tires, then you can use your stock rims for winter.

good brands of winter tires include:

blizzack lm-22
blizzack lm-25
dunlop wintersport 3d
dunlop wintersport m3
hankook icebears w300
*nokian hakkapeliitta r
*nokian hakkapeliitta rsi

(nokians are pretty much the best winter tire...ever but its costly and hard to find...average set of staggered 18's will be around $1400 + tax).
most of these come in the below sizes:

205/55-16
225/50-16
225/45-17
225/40-18
225/40-18
255/35-18

when it comes to winter tires, a thinner tire gives you more ability to cut through snow than a wider tire. pretty standard physics. a larger wider tire has more of a contact patch, thus spreading more weight over a larger area. a thinner tire has a smaller contact patch thus having more weight in less area, allowing you to "cut" further into the snow.

and as far as which shops to go to, i'd personally stay away from steelcase. they are always extremely busy in the fall. lineups of 2-3 hours are not unheard of. call up albert @ speedstar or another shop local to you to swap out the tires.

if you are looking to purchase, given the strong canadian dollar currently, it will actually be cheaper to ship them directly from tirerack and they will be having a winter tire sale soon. members of this board are always happy to lend a hand should you also want to change the tires yourself
