rev match downshifting on a e92 6 speed
Guys,
Maybe it's the Drive by wire, but when i downshift gears and blimp the throttle for rev matching, nothing happens. the revs don't climb, and it ends up the synchros doing all the work... revs die down and then revs up when in gear. Is this by design, or do i have an issue? |

um..it kinda drops pretty fast for me too, but I just take it you have to get used to it and downshift faster?

Caused by CDV
Maybe this is due to the CDV (clutch delay valve), which slows the clutch engagement no matter how fast you release it? By the time the clutch engages, the RPMs from your blip might have already dropped.

it's quite obvious on my e92 compared to my miata.
miata: clutch in, gear out, blimp throttle, revs ups, drop a gear..or two , release clutch 328i: clutch in, gear out, blimp throttle...nothing...blimp again.. limp, forgets rev matching and sticks it in gear...synchro does the work and brings up the gear. What's up guys...i really miss the rev matching sounds coming to a corner. |

I know what you mean. It's almost as if there is lag when revving sometimes. You jsut gotta be quick on the throttle when the clutch is out.

what do you mean by "nothing" happens? meaning it's not shooting RPM high enough? or doesn't climb at all?

the throttle on bmw's are not very sensitive, not like many of the japanese cars. it was worse on old models u can pretty much tap dance on the the gas and nothing would happen, just hold it down for longer

i've been hitting it 1/2 throttle and i do it quick after clutch in. there's movement in the revs, but very little. the entire sequence of downshift shouldn't be more than 1sec, so i'm used to really quick shifts from my miata.
I'll keep on trying |

depending on what gear you are in...blipping the throttle can mean having the gas all the way down for a split second and catching the right rpm to match. the blipping is done when the clutch is down.
i have a 335i 6 speed and i do it no problem. but then again i've been rev matching for like 10 yrs. note - don't rev match from gear 2 to 1.

Only difference that I noticed from my old IS3 is that I almost hold the throttle when I blip it for about an extra .5 seconds lol

Exactly. I came from a G35 Coupe and that thing was a tap on the throttle and the revs would go up...transitioning to my 328xi coupe was very different...I now have to blip it, but not a quick slam on the throttle...it's more of a push if that makes any sense.

This thread's making me feel better. When I test drove a manual E92 this spring it had been 7 years since I'd driven a manual, and I kept on flubbing by heel and toe downshifts (but not my double clutches - THAT would have gotten a rise out of the salesguy). I can blame the car instead of myself

Just for showing off I'll have you know my old 88 Corolla GTS gearbox paid the price for my learning how to do that! The only time double clutching ever made any practical difference was with my old 84 Mazda 626. It used to grind its gears going into reverse, so a double clutch did the trick to solve that problem. The a friend who was big into autocrossing taught me the whole heel and toe double clutch thing when I got the GTS.

Compared to Japanese cars (eg. TL, G35, etc), the E9x's drive-by-wire accelerator pedal is not as aggressive or sensitive at throttle tip-in. I believe most car makers make the gas pedal more sensitive/touchy in the initial 5-10% of pedal movement to give the car a false sense of greater power than there is. However, BMW doesn't believe in this because it is more difficult to control the driving wheels when the gas pedal is overly sensitive and if you're already near traction limits eg. corners, rain/snow, etc. What I do during a rev match is usually to prepare for a turn, so I already have the left part of my forefoot kinda 30-50% (depending on hard I brake) deep into the brakes, and the right part of my forefoot is able to stab deeply into the accelerator (the depth depending on how much I roll the forefoot). I find BMW's pedals are set up perfectly for this type of footwork, as the brake pedal becomes level with the gas pedal when braking moderately hard, which is when you may need to rev match.
