Hi guys,

I posted this on maxforums, but the "traffic" on their E90 forums seems to have slowed considerably... So I'm reposting here. You information is greatly appreciated:



I know many people have replaced their run flat tires with "conventional" tires. I was looking at Tirerack.com, and it mentions TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor), and they charge about $180 (as I recall) for them. Now, I understand why that is needed for the runflats, but is the sensor neccessary if I will buy conventional tires?

What happens (ie to the dash-light) if you put on conventional tires and no tpms? is the light always going to stay on?


I haven't taken ownership of my car yet, so please excuse me if this is in the manual somewhere.

A search of the forums didn't really provide an answer.

TPMS is only used in the US Spec'd cars. so unless you have a car purchased from the US, you wont need it. canadian spec uses FTM (flat tire monitor) which calculates the RPM (revs per min) of each tire, so should i go low, it will rotate slower. with all this being said, our cars do come with the TPMS from factory. it does nothing. infact, you can remove them when you dismount your tires and sell em to a US member should you wish.

it is suggested every time you change wheels/tires, you reset your FTM system. if you have idrive, can be done through the Wheel/Tire menu. otherwise, this can be done thru the BC stalk

So if for the winter I'm thinking of buying 16" tires instead of the 17" stocks, the reset of the FTM system would account for this? Or should I just pony up the extra money and get 17" for the winter as well?

provided that you have 16" wheels for your 16" winter tires, then it shouldnt be a problem. if you are getting a 335, most 16" wheels wont clear the brakes on the 335.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I will be getting an 09 328i with the Sports Package.

It comes with the 17" Summer RFTs, and I would like to get a set of 16" tires+rims (probably non-RFT) for the Winter season.
