DIY: Split Armrest Install

Ok fellas, after installing the Blacklines on 8/29/06, and the ///M e-brake & ///M shift knob earlier today, I decided to take a crack at the armrest. I was successful, and I found that the task is really quite simple. I took pictures of the 20 minute process.

F.Y.I...there are parts that will come w/ the armrest that won't be needed (..i.e...extra rods, some spring contraption, etc.). You can reuse the rods that were on the stock armrest.

Remove the rear climate controls by grabbing it along the top and the sides, and pulling gently. Be careful not to break the clips.

Using a pair of pliers, grip the small metal rods and push toward the outside. The outside tip of each rod is grooved to help it stay in place. That is the reason that it must be pushed to the outside. Remove the stock armrest by lifting out and up.

A side-by-side comparison of the stock armrest vs. the split euro armrest.

Put the euro armrest in place, and install the metal rods in the reverse fashion in which you removed them. Use the pliers to pull the rod towards the inside so that the grooved ends will mate with the housing of the center console.

A completed picture of the install pre-climate control reassembly.

Climate control reassembled.

A photo of the armrest, e-brake handle, and shift knob installed.

Mods please place this thread in the list of DIY's in the DIY listing.

I ordered all of the parts from Tischer BMW in Maryland. Jason rocks!

It opens just like our stock armrest, and the side closest to the driver slides forwards and backwards.

Looks great, but 225 for an armrest is a bit pricey for my budget.

Very nice. My Acura TL armrest slides forwards and backwards. I mistakenly try to pull my e90's like that, forgetting it doesn't do that.

I think this is a nice mod, esp. if you drive a lot, the ability to pull it forward to rest your right elbow on will make for a much more comfortable drive.

Quite simply...

...I found the stock armrest visually less appealing. Isn't that the reason that most people mod???? I mean, what do blacklines do for everybody that the stock taillights don't? Understand how loaded your question is?

I disagree. I have been wanting to do this for a while now, but I've been put off by the admittedly high cost. The stock rest is ok for me, but it's poorly positioned for my g/f because she has the seat so much further forward than I do and her right elbow is unsupported. I was hoping to pick one up on the German eBay, but finding a lemon one is proving almost impossible

Great write-up. Thanks for sharing

Do you have picture of the 'opened' armrest? Do they flip open like the original armrest? I wish it had two layers like those of many other cars.. good for storing small items. I find storage an issue on the E90.

I don't have a picture of it opened, but it opens in the exact same manner as the original armrest. There is no change in that respect. Even if it did open into two split compartments, that wouldn't change the volume capacity of the compartment itself.
