dealer recommends 25,000 km's, or once a year.
i would do it every 12,000 km's, or twice a year.
lots of people here do it every 6,000 km's.

it depends on how you drive, how often you drive, and what you drive. for example, an m3 changes oil more often than a 328.

guys please, if you purchase the cars, please do an oil change at least every 10k. Your engines will be runing a lot better. Did we change the technology in engines ? No... They do make the components run more precised together but they still move in heat and collect dirt from the combustion chamber. The only reason why the dealer says to change the oil every 20k is because every car off the lot comes with maintenance included for 80k. If they would've said change the oil every 10k, well, that's twice more visits to the dealer. That's not making them any money!!! The car will last untill 200k but they will run like crap. They also say the tranny oil is good for the life of the vehicules. Please read the horor stories on the E46 forums. That's why so many lemons on the road. People buying cars brand new and not maintaining them and when the lease is over or after 4 years they change to another brand new car and it's not their problem. It might be your best friends kid problem, or a relative of yours. Your situation might change and you may not be able to get a new car and you'll be stuck with your own made lemon. Take a look at your oil and your filter after 10k and think about it. There are places that do an synthetic oil change for less than $100. Trust me, it's a good investment. If not, when it's time to replace the tranny or the engines, guess what ?! All the rest of them will be pretty much in the same boat, not maintened and they could break 6 months after you replaced it.

I did my first oil change at, I believe around 7~8000 kms. That was almost a year ago. Now My car is at 16xxx kms after the cruise we just had a couple weeks ago. I'm planning to do my second oil change pretty soon. Either at the end of september or when my car hits around 17500 kms.

A lot of people do a break in oil change that is a lot earlier than 10k km. Because the car is new, the metal parts in the engine will shave some metal flakes as it is getting settled. Therefore a lot of members like to remove this as soon as they reached the break-in period.

5000 miles or 8000km's.

Someone actually has done a study on the dirty oil for an N54 engine. The results are below:

Quote:
-High iron count which was 3 times the average of those who have changed at 5500 miles
-High Nitration, which indicates the oil was used longer then it should have been.
-Viscosity higher then average. Remember, viscosity testing is done at 210 degrees farenheit, which is 40-60 degrees lower then normal operation oil temps in the n54 engine. Viscosity is thought to have a direct relationship with oil temperatures. Higher the temperature, the more the oil loses its strength. Now imagine what the viscosity is at 250-270F.

With those things being said and from speaking with several different fluid dynamic engineers, BMW is wrong for saying it's ok to change the oil for the n54 engine at 15,000 miles, especially with higher then average oil temperatures.

Like Me__Hi said very well, the oil change needs to be done much more regularly, around 8000km depending on how you drive it. BMW's financial accountants are telling you to do an oil change every 25,000km, which is a fucking joke.

My first oil change was done at 20,000 km as recomended by the car's computer.

I won't do any break in oil change. It's not necessary and chances are it will not have any impact to your car.

keep your car until the warranty period runs out and find out for yourself if 20k oil changes are good for the life of YOUR car...

Im thinking that Bmw is doing these long interval oil changes so that when the warranty is up, the car will most likely need an engine rebuild, thus keeping their insanely expensive dealer service centers nice and busy.

And for all you naysayers who think changing oil every 20,000+ kms is ok, next time you are at the service center, ask to see your old oil and filter...Yes, that 'black tar molasses' is what’s been running through your engine for god knows how long.....

It's like trying to say to fat people that they're gonna die of a heart attack because they eat crap. They know it, but they do it anyway. If they don't take care of their bodies, how do you expect to take care of their car ? For some reason, people that understand more than the others end up paying for the other's mistakes. This is the general rule for every aspect of society. Sorry, but I'm drunk again.

I tried to pull that 1 year oil change thing at my dealership and they told me that they change oil strictly by when the cars computer tells them to (i.e. when the oil service indicator is on). So basically they'll leave it in there as long as the indicator is not on, no matter how old the oil is. Am i getting the run-around by these chumps or what?

^^ Thats bull.

Dealerships in US are a lot better when it comes to service. I get my car serviced at Towne BMW, and have found them to be a lot better than local dealerships here.

I called them and said "I think I need a yearly oil change". The answer I got was "When did you want to get it done".

Simple as that. My computer still said I have 13000km left or March 2010 for an oil change. But they insisted that I needed the yearly oil change .

Plus, they didn't reset the mileage interval for the oil
