Exclamation Everything you always wanted to know about ED in Canada

I thought it would be good to summarize the ED process in Canada. I've been through a lot of posts in this forum and there is a lot of info but doesn't cover everything and makes it hard to figure it out.
I went to my dealer yesterday and I finally got all the info.

First of all, the Canadian ED pricing is totally different from the US ED pricing. I guess you guys in the US are lucky. We pay more

I'll take as an example an E92 328i.
MSRP is 43,600$. ED is 40,110$.
Now delivery and dropoff process is the same as for the US ED. But make sure it goes through Bremerhaven in Germany. If you choose another dropoff location you'll pay additional Inland freight to port of loading.
The big hit in Canada is that you'll have to pay 6.1% import duty (on top of GST and PST). The 6.1% import duty is calculated on depreciated value of the car. So unless you stay there for several months, you can use the 40,110$. Make the calculation, it's about 2,450$

OK it's not finished yet for the bad news. For domestic delivery, you pay 1,895$ for PDI & freight. For ED, you don't pay PDI & freight to your dealer, but (yes there is a but), you still pay shipping cost. For a 3-Series it's 1,896$ (assuming again it's going through Bremerhaven). For example, if you drop it in Rome (Italy) it's an additional 1,331$.

I'm not done yet. With the US ED, insurance is included up to 14 days. Not with the Canadian ED For a 3-Series, it goes from 77$ to 171$ depending of the type of coverage you want (for 2 weeks). For a month it goes from 165$ to 365$. On top of that you'll have to pay the Hazard Warning Kit (175$).

OK let's wrap it up. For an E92 328i you'll save 43,600$ (MSRP) - 40,110$ (ED) = 3,490$. You substract the import duty (2,450$) your saving goes from 3,490$ to 1,040$. Minus the insurance and the hazard kit, it goes down to 788$ (based on less than 2 weeks in Germany and cheapest insurance coverage). If you add the travel cost to Europe and lodging, you don't save a penny.

Ok some people will say you don't do it for the money but for the experience. It's up to everyone to decide. Much more paperwork on your side too, for the import duty and shipping cost. Full Payment has to be done 30 days prior to pickup in Germany too. So there are pros and cons. You decide.

I thought it would be good to summarize it, since it's nowhere clearly explained in this forum (maybe it should be a Sticky Post). Anyway the best is to discuss it with your dealer. Personally I decided to go Domestic delivery and not ED. Just waiting for the offer from my dealer. Hope this post will help some of the Canadians out there. cheers.

THANKS TERRY, AWESOME SUMMARY

I don't think this is fair to Canadian, why do they have to make life so difficult.

I´m not sure why you make this a question of fair or unfair (or "life so difficult" which is a great exageration).

Your local importer decided on a program which does not result in a lot of savings. That is a business decision on their part based on what they see in the market potential.

What is not fair about that?

Exactly....
The only unfortunate disparity is our government,
who have their hand in our pocket to the tune of 6.1%

The other thing .... when you're calculating savings.....
MSRP is not what most of us pay when buying local.

We're a small market, so every car BMW Canada sells has to add to the bottom line. I would guess the percentage of US buyers using ED is a tiny one, so it is a doable program down there.
