DIY Software Upgrades?

I seem to remember there was a way to do software upgrades yourself. Specifically, I'd like to install Sirius and the factory alarm after purchase from Tischer and then activate them. My dealer wants to charge a lot of money for activation (2-3 hours), and I am a cheap bastard. I have searched and can't find this, but that's probably due to some sort of incompetence.

As I recall, there was a website you visit, pay a daily fee, and then were able to download the update to your car, presumably through some sort of USB to OBDII connector. So, am I remembering correctly or am I high?

Thanks,

I think your high (or at least I've never seen anything like that). I just see everybody bitching about the dealer fees for activation/upgrade fees. I'm on the same boat.

As far as the alarm is concerned, there is a thread on how to try to get that turned on for free.

There is no cheap solution. You have to take your car to the dealer and get them to activate. Its gonna cost.

I had an Ipod Interface Adapter installed by someone and then took it to the dealership to get it reprogrammed. It ran $120 for one hour of labor for reprogramming.

The DIY updates discussion was about using a SAE J2534 pass-thru adapter and a daily ($30 last time I checked) subscription to bmwtis.com for access to the software images. It should work just fine *in theory* but I'm not aware of anybody trying it.

That said, you don't need a dealership to do the coding; any indie shop with an Autologic can do it no problem. Anybody who's done one before should be able to get you in and out in 30 mins.

This is exactly what I was thinking of. Thanks.
