Cost of Maintenance after warrenty and life of E90
Hi guys, I am wondering how long E90s can last? Do you guys think it can go up to 2xx,xxx's without much to fix? I am also wondering if maintenance would be very expensive without warrenty in high kms. What do you guys think!?

Dude, seriously - you're aware that the e90 is a BMW?

you'll probably get a more accurate answer in 3 years. But for the record, I would say this:
don't own a BMW outside of warranty. It's a real pain in the ass to have to pay for small problems popping up here and there. |

I have a 06 E90 330XI with 82K kms. Here's a quick scenario. You're looking at minimum $100 for an oil change every 12,000kms. I had a windshield washer fluid leak from both headlights, cost me like $300 to fix both. The special sparkplugs on our cars are very expensive since you can only get them from BMW. There are 6 ingnition coils on our cars, those are a pretty penny if any of those go.
You gotta pay to play. =) |

If you don't want to get dirty and do small preventive maintenance stuff like oil changes then ANY bmw would be a pain and expensive to maintain, but as of this moment i have had no major issues with the 335i, but then again it only has 5000 clicks on it.

Don't get me wrong, its been solid since i picked it up in late 05. However, its out of it warranty period now so its gonna be expensive to maintain if anything major goes wrong. Mechanically, its solid since i've always stuck to the maintenance schedule at the dealer and even did extra oil changes inbetween. If the car has been properly maintained, then don't lose sleep over it. Just know that its a BMW and these cars are always expensive to maintain.

I had an estimate twice as big for just one repair in a 4 year old Mazda (tranny blew up), which was close to half the price of the car. Ended up selling the car cause repair was not worth it. At the same time two other mazdas I had experience with were solid well in 200Ks. These things happen - does not mean they are guaranteed to happen.

Interesting thread. sounds like people opt for ditching their cars for yet another payment. I used to be on the lease treadmill. If you stand not getting a new car every 3-4 years then owning, even with the maintenance makes more sense. Think about it. Average payment of $700/mth......or $8400 a year. Even if something major happens there is no way you are spening that kind of cash to maintain after the warranty expires. I have 68k on my e90 and so far rock solid. Oil changes every 12k and following OBC maintenance.

What I find so interesting is that this is an extremely popular car, all over the world. How could BMW have such liabilities out there roaming the streets? This isn't some car that is mainly sold in North America with parts bin items we're talking about here.

The way I see it is that if you can afford a BMW in the first place, you've budgeted for the maintenance cost and you can afford it.
My friend told me he had a Lamborghini come into his shop for a new windshield. The windshield costed $8000 for the parts. |

Not that surprised. Although 5k sounds more like it. Dealer wants just over 1k for an OEM 3series windshield.. |

To the OP, remember that any car costs a lot of money to fix. My dad has a 6 year old Toyta and the O2 sensor failed. It seized onto the manifold and even not going through the dealer (i.e. friend who knows how to fix it) it costed about $800 to fix (labor and parts). Needed to replace the whole manifold and the O2 sensor. If I had gone through the dealership, it would have easily been $2000. Thing is...O2 sensors need to be replaced periodically and the part itself is cheap but if it seizes onto the manifold, replacing the whole thing gets costly (labor to replace the entire manifold is 3 times just a single O2 sensor).
I think all cars will be costly to fix. But yes, if you take care of it well, your car will last a bit longer. But ultimately, it's a machine and all machines break down. |
