I get it now
Hey, I'm new here. Sadly, I don't own a BMW, but I've loved them ever since my cousin took me for a ride in his E36 328is 8 years ago. Now my dad's looking for a new car, and for the longest time he was only considering Japanese makes (Acura, Lexus, Infiniti). He had some kind of unconscious hatred of anything German, for whatever reason (maybe misconceptions about reliability, build quality, idk). But last week I finally convinced him to go to the BMW dealership to give the 335i a try.
Needless to say, it only took about 2 minutes for him to fall in love with the car ("holy ****, this thing is like a rocket down the onramp"). We blasted down the freeway (safely, of course, but quickly) and on the return trip, the sales guy offered ME (I'm 16) to drive it back -- he didn't even ask me for my license (this speaks volumes about the plight of salesmen these days)! And after blasting back down the freeway (safely, of course!), I can finally say that I know firsthand why all of you enthusiasts like BMWs so much -- the whole car FEELS planted and compliant, the accelerator/brakes are perfectly linear, the steering is direct, but you already knew that). Somebody tried to merge into my lane, almost hitting me because she wasn't looking, but I got to see the legendary BMW handling in action when turning the wheel quickly to avoid her (the sales guy said I was a quick thinker and a good driver, but all credit is due to the car). Anyways, enough over-excited storytelling. My dad's convinced that the 335i sedan is going to be his next car, and it took a 20-minute test drive to erase all of his misconceptions and end his desire for Japanese cars. We've test-driven all the competitors (G35, TL-S, IS350) and he used to be very impressed by all of them, but not anymore. He said he just couldn't go back to the soft, plushy feel of those cars. In short, I just wanted to say that BMW has won over another one. And since I won't be getting the keys to a 335i handed to me again for a long, long, time, it's back to reading Car and Driver magazine for me...haha |

Welcome to the forum. Nice write-up. We've all had that a-ha moment with BMW's here. I think you mean to say that your dad had a subconscious hatred of German cars. You can't really unconsciously hate something since, well, you're passed out.
Enjoy your time here and hopefully your dad lets you borrow the car every now and again. |

Welcome!
And as the saying goes for BMW's: the feel of the wheel will seal the deal!

Sounds like you had some fun! Good for you!
It's nice to be able to read such good grammar, tense and spelling for once from a 16yr old!! Keep it up, dude.

Nice, and it shares a theme that most of us have read here before or felt ourselves -- with a Bimmer, you either "get it" after about 5 minutes of driving, or you don't. I test drove lots of cars before I bought mine, and the Bimmer just felt so much more "dialed in" than the others.

my Dad and I had precisely the same experience 6 years ago when we test drove a 911 for the same time. We had never driven anything that handled so well.

I test drove Audi 4, Mercedes 180, Toyota Avensis, RAV4, SAAB93, VolvoV50 and BMW 320i and nothing gave me the "feeling" that BMW gave and the deal was clinched! I have been driving Toyotas all my life and have been happy with them but they never moved me the way BMW did.

Welcome. Nice write-up.
Now that you've been spoiled by a 3 series, you've got to have one. How about a used E46? It's a great car and it costs much less than a used E9x. Then you and your dad can share your enthusiasm for these fine cars. You can even wash and wax your cars together! If you want to maximize your enjoyment, learn how to drive a stick and buy a 5MT. |

Congrats on your command of the English language at 16. My "get it" experience was a 5 year old E36 w/85K miles on the clock. Bought it on the spot.
