The Future of BMW's M Division: New Turbo Fours and Sixes Likely
http://blogs.motortrend.com/6470938/...ely/index.html
"A turbo-six will replace the M3's 400-horsepower, 4.0L V-8 and a 300-plus-horsepower turbo four will rocket a 1 Series M (just don't call it an M1)." |

Meh, I'm not too crazy about having a turbo 4. I know, I know, high-revving fun, blah, blah, blah. Call me crazy, I just prefer sixes - always have.

Maybe they could start focusing on losing weight on the 1 first.... It's a pig compared to what they led us to believe it would be.... A turbo four would help that greatly, but there must be a lot more weight there that can be lost...

I am skeptical of being able to get to high Hp 4 cylinder engines without turboeing the living daylights out of it, which means turbo lag (did I mention I hate turbo lag) and a certain je-ne-sais-evoness which frankly would not be suited to BMW. So BMW better be carefull how high they string those 4s - I don't see them going to 300 Hp without exhibiting the traits I refer to above. But if they leave it for the 1 and keep it to 250-280 max Hp, and combine it with a diet programme, the 4 could be interesting. As for the changeover from 8 to twinturbo 6 for the M, my understanding is that will only happen for the next generation M3s, so we're a while away.

While what you said is true for how things are right now, in theory you CAN develop a turbo engine that behaves exactly like an NA engine. For one the boost released by the BOV valve can in theory be stored and used later when the pressure isn't fully built up yet, etc.
Also superchargers may also make a comeback with technology that allows for 0 drag during idling and cruising (electric maybe). Quote:

While we're at it, why don't we all just go fully electric. Instantaneous torque, yee haw!

Quite likely, actually. Though probably more like 420 HP not 450. The variable valve system will be changed out no doubt.

Not surprising. The V8 has become a dinosaur. Don't get me wrong, I'm a 60's muscle car lover. But with high fuel costs and the technology available today, turbo 4 and 6 cylinder engines just make more sense. This article say the future S4/S5s will be turbo 4s. http://www.leftlanenews.com/audi-s4-...-cylinder.html

but seriously, the days of sub-3000 lbs sport sedans is long gone. with all the current safety requirements and customer's expectations of having a car loaded with "standard features" and 9 airbags, curb weights are way up. |
