Oil temps take forever to come up, normal?

To give an example, my commute into work is about 15 miles one way, most of it semi-highway (65-70 mph, with lights). It also becomes semi-highway pretty quickly, so I'm not spending much time on neighborhood streets. About 10 minutes into my drive (most of the way to work), I noticed that my oil temp gauge had only come up about 2-3 bars from the 110 deg base temp. Ambient temp here this morning was 41 deg F. I wasn't babying it.

The other day, I drove home from a friend's house on route 1. Driving about 40-50 most of the way, and ambient temp at 40 deg F, it literally took about 15 minutes for the gauge to show ANY increase in oil temp. I was even driving up some fairly steep hills for some of this.

I know we have an oil cooler, but I can't believe it's that efficient. When I picked up my car in europe in January it was getting warmer much faster.

Is my oil temp sensor bad?

Oil does not flow to the OC until about 240 degrees when a mechanical thermostat opens. Just take it easy as possible (dont really rev the crap out of it), and it will be fine. Probably wont hurt to bust it off a min or 2 before you leave. That will get a little heat in it.

7 quarts of oil can take some time to heat up. In the colder months, I used to make it to work(12 miles) before hitting 210.

Completely normal.

On some of the colder days, my oil temp didn't even budge if I hopped right on the freeway and kept driving.... I was thinking of getting a grille flap but then I thought "nah that's silly."

True, but I like to wait until the needle comes up some before I get into it. 15 minutes is agony. My E46 M3 came up to temp MUCH quicker, and had just as much oil (if not more).

Keeping it under 3k is pussy footing it. I only keep it under 3k for the first couple minutes until the water temp comes up. Then I tend to keep out of boost until oil temp comes up, but I can rev all the way to redline and still keep out of boost if I try.

Oil temp is much more important than water temp. When oil temp is OK then your good to go and push the car, before is not really recommended. But I don't think I have to tell you guys

5w-30 vs. 10w-65 may have something to do with it. I could be wrong though.

Definitly can. My M3 heats up differently with Red Line 10W40 vs Mobil 1 15W50 oils, and the sustained operating temps it reaches vary by ~15F from one to another type.

The actual engine design is a big part as well, the faster oil reaches the operating temp the more efficient the heat exchange is between the engine block and the oil.

, As small child I recall my grand-pa using tin foil to cover the front grill of our Lada (Russian FIAT) so that the car could be drivable in winter months.

just drive normal. I drive up to 70- 75 mph without bringing it above 3k rpm. Just time your shifts and you'll be fine. After that, the road is yours.
