Insurance question - hit a post
I backed my car into a post in the parking lot. If I file insurance claims, will that increase my insurance premium?
Just wonder what you all have for collision deductible. I have $1,000, and the damage is just a couple of hundred dollars above that. Should I just deal this on my own? Thanks.

Yes, it will increase your premiums for next year and beyond.
If the damage is just a shade above your deductible, it makes sense to just deal with it on your own. Did you really need us to tell you this? |

not sure if that classifies as a moving violation (which usually causes a premium increase). but if its only a couple hundred above your deductible, I'd just skip the insurance all together, and save it for when you really need to claim something (since claim frequency can be used to adjust rates).
But you can always call your insurance agent and ask them. |

It's always good to hear others' thoughts. In my life I've made quite a few mistakes without consulting with others.
Also - curious what deductible level do you all use?

Was the post just part of the lot or part of a building? I just saw a case where some poor girl came home after dinner hit a post at her apartment building. Someone called the cops on her, they smelled alcohol, she got a DUI, insurance company cancelled her etc.. What a shitty night out that was. If it's close to deductible just shell out yourself and donot involve insurance company, my deductible is $500.

Wow, that's quite something.
Anyway, my story is that I was in a hurry to go home from work, and since I parked at a different spot from where I usually park (I forgot about this fact when I pulled out), I hit the post right next to the car. Anyway, 1 second of inattention could be worse if on a road way.

The threshold for a chargeable collision loss is usually $ 1000. Some companies offer accident forgiveness but they charge you more up front for it and some companies will forgive one anyway if you have been with them for a while.
If you compare, you will probably find there is not a huge savings in going from $ 500 to $ 1000 deductible on either collision or comp coverage. |

Just remember one thing, DO NOT SWERVE, make sure you hit the deer, that way it falls under comp and not collision! Only swerve if it is a moose or that will kill your car and probably you too.

Same here (and same rationale).

do it yourself. if your insurance company will forgive one accident, do you really want to waste it on this? btw i have a $1000 deductible and it sucks ass for small things.
