Finished my Tri Color ///M stitched shift boot!

Got it finally finished today and installed,

Really like it (Yes I know this isn't a 3-Series but Im planning to do that same to my E90)

Matches the steering wheel threads really well and this new thread I'm using is night and day to the other stuff I used on my "test boot"

I have to say I do like the true badge match colors very much, I was contemplating using the same color threads as LeatherZ uses as I really like the work they do but I ended up going with the matching colors (or as close to) as the steering wheel,
This is something that really takes time and patience, If you rush it will show so I took my time on this and completed it over 2 days,
Im not the best photographer, The boot actually looks a lot better in person!
But anyway here are some pics,

You can see its a pretty good match to the steering wheel thread,
So two shots for that perspective, One focusing on each

and finally another distance shot

Now this all couldn't be possible without the generous help of Jeff, He goes by the screen name of "rocknroad" on Bimmerforums and he actually does a lot of custom work like this for people,
He not only helped me out with what thread he uses, what color, and where to buy it! BUT he even went as far as donating the thread I used here to me so I could complete my project,
I hope he doesn't mind me showing you work he has done to his car so here is a link to that

His Interior Work

So Thank you Jeff for all your help!

Jeff donated SO much thread to me I'm actually racking my brains to think of what else to do!
I was thinking of replacing the black stitching on the E-Brake boot to red,
Don't want to go overboard with the car but I think that might also look nice,

I'm also planning to do some stitching for my 3-Series shift and brake boots too,

I like it but how come the stitching doesn't go all the way up? I think it looks kind of weird because it stops in the middle of the boot.

Looks great but i can tell that it is form over function, the thread does not look like it is actually holding the boot together.

Thanks for taking the initiative.

Thats how BMW stitched it, I simply replaced the stock black threads

Its not, the stitching holding the boot together is between this,
These are "just for show" from the factory

This is an image of the stock shift boot (not my car)

Hm.
Doesn't look good.
It looks like a bad stitch mark on frankenstein's head.
Maybe try a smaller width and denser stitching?

it should look better if the stitches are aligned and stitch up to the top

Mixed reviews

Another thing I liked,
Before I did the purple zig zag stitch I noticed just replacing the black threads with either the red or blue looked awesome,

I have an Imola red car and if I replaced the black with 2 lines of red I think it also would have looked good,

kinds like this
(just a generic shift boot, Not from or for a BMW)

But I do actually like the M color and it does match the steering wheel,
It also looks a 100% better in real life,
I took this photo outside with the top down so I think the sun bleached it out a bit,

Im also thinking 2 lines of blue and then white thread zig zagging to represent the BMW roundel colors,

That might look good,

Interesting,

I actually posted this on M3POST and so far all positive comments,

Guess it must be a M owners thing,
I can't see this looking good in a non M car (or at least one without a matching steering wheel)

I noticed that in my E90 with the M3 wheel the stitching on the wheel can look a little out of place,
I was thinking of doing the same to the E90 but I might just leave this for my M

btw, I have mad respect for M's... but I just thought what you said was funny.

I always like the polite and casual f*ck u response, "Really? cause the guys over there.. who... actually own these fine vehicles... disagree with you...isnt that interesting?"

I'm one for the more direct approach.. - HEY! FU*K YOU!

hahaha

I guess the internet can make things look worse

I didn't mean anything like that, What I meant was I think M owners who are obsessed with those colors might like it more

Trust me I LOVE my E90, LOVE IT, I get so much pleasure from having it and driving it so Im not a stuck up M owner
