Turbo lag

I realized that my 335 actually has turbo lag... After I press the gas pedal it takes about half of a second before the car accelerates... never drove a turbo car before so I'm not sure how bad a turbo lag is on other cars. But according to BMW website the twin turbo should eliminate the lag entirely XD
no kudos for BMW's false advertising XD
but the moment when the turbo kicks in does feel awesome, lol

WTF is this? scheissmann, there are a ton of very in depth threads on this topic. Have you read through any of them?

There are better ways to create an opinion thread. Try giving a more thorough review and I believe it will be better accepted by the community.

This isn't twitter friend.

that thread has nothing to do with what I'm trying to say.
I'm just wondering if this lag is normal or if there's something wrong with my car, because BMW advertises that there should be no lag.

The thread has very much to do with your car. You should not have a half second lag, especially since that's what BMW advertises.

if you have auto, thats probably the time it takes for the transmission to kick down to lower gear.

Lies. I have an auto and kickdowns are instantaneous. And he drives a stick. Poorly, too, I might add.

it really depends how fast you stump on the throttle.

The way I look at it is how long does it take us to get our motors to 1400 rpm at which point there's 300 ft. lbs.? Not very long, so I don't really feel it's an issue. I wonder if new 7 Series owners will feel this turbo lag? Because it does seem to be the way BMW is going, twin turbos.

If it worked that way for all of us it would be great. Unfortunately, it does not.

Turbo lag on most other cars with turbos is far worse. Many cars with turbos don't make any power until they reach 3000 rpm or higher. Your turbo lag is determined by the size of the turbo and the size of the motor. The size of the exhaust housing on the turbo directly affects how fast the turbo gets spooled up. Smaller housing's spool the turbo faster, but restrict the exhaust and therefore limit your power. Larger housings do the opposite. The benefit of a twin turbo system is that it allows you to have a smaller turbo for less lag and a larger turbo for for less restricted power. A single turbo car doesn't have that choice. The higher the horsepower and boost, the bigger the turbo. Look at the dyno numbers of a single turbo Toyota Supra and you'll see what I mean. A car might make 600+ hp, but when you look at the dyno you can see that the car doesn't start building effective horsepower until 4000 + rpm. 300 ft lbs of torque at 1400 rpm is incredible for anything but a diesel.

Nice first post. I agree with everything except I have a nit to pick. I believe that the two turbos on the N54 are the same size. The 335d has two turbos of different sizes.

The twin turbos allow for smaller, low-mass impellers while giving the same overall amount of peak boost as a single, larger turbo the same peak air compression. This lets them spool up quicker.
