335i coupe taken to track anyone??

Hi I am thinking of taking my 08 335i coupe to ThunderHill, but I seeing that lots of people are getting issues. Has anyone else encountered issues while at the track?

I drove hella shitty (I am used to go karts, not tracking a car) but my car came out fine. There are a lot of others w/ more experience that track their 335i's around here though.

The only problem I had is my M-sport knob came off when I went into 2nd (Buttonwillow).

Thanks for your input, did you see the other posting "down for 8 count". I am wondering if he blew the head gasket due to track time.

Also did you use stock wheels?

Everything on my car is stock except the M-sport hand brake, M-sport shift knob (again I pulled it off while on a slow corner), and an M-sport steering wheel (which I didn't have at the time).

That said, although I drove like a nub (I only really gunned it on the straights) the extremely cold weather (last December) that weekend probably was really good for the engine.

It seems that S4to335 and Satakal are the ones you'll probably want to talk to as I see that they track their 335i's quite often. But the former seems to have several problems w/ his car; track-related or not I am not sure.

Edit: from what I've read, w/ our cars already having a somewhat fragile HPFP, the oil cooler isn't that great for track use either.

Just do it and be smart about it. Watch your gauges and if you get higher temps then back off. Short shifting, smooth braking and good lines will keep your car safe.

I have a stock, besides suspension, 335 and have done a 1:59 at Infineon on street tires. I don't have a special oil cooler, intercooler, BOV, catch can, tune or anything that would make my car more durable than one off the lot.

Be smart and your car will be fine.

Caveat: 335 is very fast and it makes you want more when you pass a Ferrari, Z06, GT3...no matter who you pass, drive to what the car allows you to do.

Not on run flats. They will slow you down but if that's what you have then drive to those.

Driving to your equipment's capability is one of the best lessons to learn as you move along in HPDEs. Don't overdrive your car. Also, don't complain about it.

PS. I've done both but maybe I'll grow up some day

A 6 MT 335 will do much better oil temp wise then a AT 335 on the track since the oil cooler has to cool the transmition oil as well on the AT ... Nuch more likely to overheat with the AT with a stock oil cooler

I have induced Limp twice at Buttonwillow in August and I am not fast at all compared to Satakal and S4....

If you have an auto, get an after market oil cooler for sure
If you have a manual, you should be okay as long as you watch your temps and short shift a little around 6K RPM when things start getting toasty

Tracks are also different, for example on the ROVAL CA speedway, you shouldn't have much of an issue cuz the long oval portion allows the oil temps to drop a bit with more speed and more air flow...

Minor correction. The COOLANT RADIATOR has to share some space to cool the ATF.

The standalone oil cooler is just for oil, even in a slushbox.

It's the coolant that will hit the magic 242F number and cut boost, quickly followed by limp-a-zoid.....often even if oil is below the 304F magic number.

Satakal. That's really nice of you but we've never ridden together and that's a lot to live up to.

You maintained a similar pace to an instructor driven C6 z06. That was a fun ride for me in the vette. I was impressed.

So a stock engine 335 with coilovers and street tires can keep pace with a C6 Z06..... ?

OP, take the car to the track without changes. you probably won't be be able to drive it hard enough to make it overheat for a while.

Agree... But eventually as you get better and faster your mod list should follow the following order:

1. Dedicated rims and tires for the track (street tires)
2. Seat time
3. More seat time
4. Maybe an upgraded oil cooler
5. A lot more seat time
6. Some more seat time
7. Upgraded Brakes
8. upgraded supsension
9. A heck of a lot more seat time
10. R compounds
11. You guesses it .. more seat time
12. More suspension upgrades
13. Finally if you are still alive and have $$ left over, speed mods
14. Dedicated track car

What did I miss?

Tell me about it, I am dying to get a E36 M3 as a track/project car but in this economy and at my skill level, it's hard to justify the purchase
