Well, that was an experience!

I went around about 5 laps with an instructor and then again with another instructor and my car got an ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT!!!! I think this is LIMP MODE!!!!

They had a real photographer there but I was able to have my friend take one picture with my front end in it and here are my other pics.

Or worse...you HAVE an oil cooler and you limped because your coolant overheated due to the slushbox ATF sharing the radiator?

^ my theory too. Stop shifting at redline.

The car has so much torque, short shift it. You could shift at 5k and not be noticably slower.

Don't run in DS mode either. It's really no faster to do so yet you will hold and average higher RPMs.

I was able to run 5 - 20min sessions in 80F+ temps and had no temps over 250-260. I do have a retrofitted oil cooler though.

So how do you guys predict the 335d will do at the track? If the 335 needs to be short shifted anyway to keep from limping then would the monster low end torque of the diesel make it competitive

It's not a problem of shifting correctly.

The problem is that with a slushbox, the coolant radiator is used for coolant....and a portion is used to cool ATF.

That means your coolant, not having as much "radiator" to cool it down, is much more likely to overheat.

That said, lack of OC and track use is a recipe for limp-o!

Tracking a N54 without an oil cooler is a disaster waiting to happen. Limp mode is the least of your worries. If I were you, I'd do an oil change ASAP.

Oil cooler?? I thought that later 335i's had an additional oil cooler. Doesn't that help?

The 335D will do great at the track. The diesel doesn't generate nearly the same kind of heat as the gasoline engine. Don't forget, BMW has been building turdbo'ed diesel engine for over 20 years. It's one thing they know how to do RIGHT.

At a redline of 5,000 RPM you will never go into limp mode in a diesel. Plus the fuel act as a lubricant AND has a cooling effect on the engine. As for it to be competitive...The relative low RPM coupled with gearing will make it competitive ONLY in endurance racing, where the fuel efficiency of the diesel will result in a fewer pit-stops.
