My e90 330i vs Friends e92 328i
well the conditions where
after rain, wet ground, straight away till around 80mph, DTC ON, car is put into sports BUT NOT TIPTRONIC. AND I LOST?! well we went 3 rounds 1st-i burned out while he took off then my dtc came on and i lost horribly 2nd&3rd-still had a burnout until dtc kicked in, then just lost by maybe 2-3 feet. question is, is it my car that isn't performing? or was it just the fact of the wet ground? |

Hmm that's interesting. I have a classmate with an E93 328. I've been interested to see how I would do. The DTC lagging is weird though. Maybe its a glitch that they fixed in the firmware for newer models?
BTW, for BMWs, its called steptronic (copyright licensing and all that mess). Just FYI.

the launch makes a huge difference. huge. try again when the streets are dry and you can get good traction, then report back.
Also, DS mode should shift fine for this (and is probably faster than doing it manually). Was the 328 manual, or auto? |

That's what i thought, i figured because of my more torque/hp i would lose grip easier than him and therefore dtc slowing me down to regain grip then going.
also, if i put my car into DS will it automatically go into 1st? and whats better, to floor it right before the click? or to just put the pedal to the metal? cuz i'm at a stop anyways so it's not like the car will double downshift |

Idk what the car does when you click it down while in step. I want to know though.

if its dry out, you should be able to just floor it. pedal to the metal. it will start in 1st if you floor it. If you still get a lot of wheel spin, then you may have to ease up a bit on the launch until you can get traction.

I'd use the brake to wind up the torque converter and then just floor it. On 328 you don't break traction unless you start at a very high rpm, so I don't think wheelspin in the dry will be a big issue for either of you. I'd do the runs with traction control full off and modulate with the throttle

Set transmission in M1. Power brake...hold left foot on brake and press throttle bringing RPMs upto about 3300. when the flag drops lift on the brake and floor it with your right foot. let the transmission shift for you at redline. by 80Mph you should have a good car length on your buddie assume his 328 is also an automatic.
also, in wet conditons tread condtion especially with Brigstones is critical in putting power down.

If i were you I would have gone full traction control off.
I rarely drive with it on. When on, Once your car feels the loss of traction it cuts power. I hate that. Whenever making a hard turn in 2nd gear i start to drift a bit and my car kills the power to the wheels. Turn it off and just know the feel of your car. (I'm not at all saying street racing is ok, i hope you and your friend were on a closed empty road. I'm also not telling you to always drive with DSC/DTC off. Just telling you what i would do in my car if I was trying to keep power to my wheels through a straightaway race.) |
