LA Area Auto-x'ers

Good Friday Afternoon,

I have somewhat reluctantly taken over the task of running the BMW CCA LA Chapter auto-x program for 2009. This season I will be running my GTI as I don't want to take any risks with the wife's 335i and sold mine. We have 3 events scheduled at Cal Speedway and I am working on putting one together for the Fairplex at Pomona.

I am interested in finding other people in the LA area who might want to participate, especially with event management. Please let me know.

For a sample of a typical course at Cal Speedway, see here:

Here's the really sad part... I volunteered to run the program because I really wanted to auto-x this season. But the actual running of the event is so involved that I might not be able to free up to run. ARGH.

I am working with Hooters to cater the event. That should draw a participant or two... I am also working with Satch Carlson to try to plan a TSD Rally for the day before the auto-x, ending near Fontana. That should also be really fun!!

Each driver gets between 9 and 12 runs, 3 of them timed. But hey, it includes chicken in a box for lunch!

We are cursed by having few places willing to accept the liability of our event. As such, the parking lot at Cal Speedway is overly expensive. It is unreasonable IMHO to pay that much for a parking lot. But that is all we got.

On the up side we have not raised our prices in years.

If anybody wants to sponsor the event, we can lower the price for participants.

What happen to Irwindale Speedway? I ran there couple times back in 04 and 05. It should be cheaper than AAA Spdwy.

I have a couple of guys I AutoX with. If you bring it closer to LA area, there will be more interest for sure.

Good luck.

Good luck.
Irwindale raised their prices and repeatedly had major obstacles left in the lot. For example, despite promises to the contrary, there were often semi trucks parked in the middle of the lot. It got to be a safety concern and they refused to address it.

Plus our events usually followed after drag races. The attendees of those events left the lot filthy, with trash everywhere. So we spent much of the morning cleaning-up other peoples' trash.

They have multiple lots. Some have been resurfaced, others have not.

One of the things Pomona offers is a pre-set "track" (really just different color asphalt) that the Sheriff's use for training. That is really well paved and could be used, in whole or in part, for our auto-x course.

All of this is purely academic unless we get some more folks signing-up for our event. At this point there is one sign-up. C'mon folks...

Who is up for a TSD Rally? In connection with the Santa Monica Sports Car Club and Satch Carlson (Roundel editor), we are planning a TSD Rally for April 25th. It will end at the Aloft hotel in Rancho Cucamonga. The hotel is 6 miles from the track and is offering us a great rate of $75, plus 1,000 Starwood points. They are also offering a prize for the overall winner of the rally which consists of a free night stay!

If you sign up for the auto-x, the Rally is free. If you only want to Rally, the cost is a mere $10. I think this weekend is going to be great fun!

Exciting news! Hooter's has agreed to cater the lunch. They will be sending a couple of servers and plenty of food. This event now offers so much value for a mere $75 - You get the auto-x, lunch (with the added bonus of attractive servers), PLUS the Saturday TSD Rally all included in your entry fee. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

People need to sign-up for this event. If we don't get enough pre-registration the event will be canceled.

This driving fun weekend is a great value and should be truly memorable! Don't wait too long to register.
