Car shakes while turning on(cold)

hey there folks if i go to turn my car on in the mornings, it idles so rough i actually have to sit and wait for about 2-3 minute until it goes away. ever since this has been happening it takes forever for my oil temp to get hotter...what gives?

Has this happened to anyone?

Mine sounds like it's missing and it's a tad rough, but not so much that it impacts anything. I have been experiencing long cranks on a semi-regular basis for the last two months.

lots of posts regarding this, its not always the HPFP. Fuel Pump issues are almost always characterized with long cranks at startup. I have the same issue as the OP and no issues with startup, it's from a cold start and the long shaky revs. My car was in for a week and all they came up with was to replace the injectors. Today I started the car and got the same issue throwing the car into limp mode. Turned the car off and then back on and no limp mode. My best guess at this point is the o2 sensors. Can I get the SA and Service Tech to buy off on this? That remains to be seen.

Same thing happened to me as well but only because of the gas I was using. Try switching gas stations and see if that helps.

I just had my HPFP replaced an my car is doing the same thing, doesnt matter if its cold or warm the car vibrates when its idled.

The RPMs dont move, but i can feel a "thumping" under the drivers side seat, and in the shifter..

Never did this before..

I started noticing the same thing about a week ago. The car still starts up normally, in a timely manner, but while I'm letting the car idle it just seems to be a little jerky. I can actually feel the car shudder a little bit... hopefully it's nothing major.

An exclamation point is on the dashboard.

Other than that there are no lights anywhere else.

This is exactly what I am experiencing this entire week. The car shakes like hell on a cold start, there is an engine knock, the exhaust has a much stronger odor and then I get a limp mode. If I turn the car off and re-start there are no warnings or problems of any kind, I drive off to work. I live in SoCal and the car is garaged, so it's only around 40-50 degrees in the morning, not exactly cold.

This seems to all have started when I saw a warning light for low engine oil. The warning just appeared on Sunday on my way home from the beach. It wasn't a moderately low (yellow light), it was a re-fill immediately warning which seemed awefully sudden. I went to the dealership first thing Monday morning and explained the situation. They re-filled the oil and I thought the problem would go away...not the case. For the last 4 mornings in a row, I've had to start the car, get limp mode, turn it off, then re-start for the issue to go away Anyone else having a similar problem? Any opinions or suggestions short of going back to the dealer?

My SA said that this problem was because of the valve lifters forming air pockets under the valve, which then go away once the engine is warm. He said BMWNA put out a notice to all the dealers, but can't do anything about the issue. Could this be the same thing?

I suppose this could be the case, but I essentially know nothing about engine mechanics. If the car can warm-up enough in the 10 seconds between the cold start/limp mode and the second start, then maybe this is the issue?

I don't know. I have an appointment with service next Friday for mine. It's making a noise like a spinning top if I accelerate when it's cold. Totally goes away once it's warm.

Damn it. I had to start my car 4 times this morning to get the Limp Mode to go away and now the "Check Engine Soon" light remains on......arggg.
