Helmet Recommendations?

OK, not sure where to post this since there is no racing/auto-x section on this site. I've signed up for an auto-x school that's happening next month. I know that I've got to wear a helmet to get on the course. Does anyone here have any recommendations? Open face, full face?

I've got a hunch that once I go to this auto-x, I'm gonna be addicted. I'll probably end up going to VIR or something down the road as well (I can feel my wallet shrinking as I type...) I know that the event loans out helmets... but the thought of swapping sweaty helmets with random folks on a hot July day doesn't rank too high on my list.

OG racing is right around the corner for me, so sourcing a helmet should be fairly easy. Unless there are better deals to be had online or via e-Bay or something.

I dont know if it will suffice, but maybe a motorcycle helmet store??? They might have a light and smaller helmet for your racing needs

Hmm... does it come with a sword and shield package? My guess is that it won't be SNELL approved... although if there is ever a Halloween driving event, it could come in handy

You can get them at your local motorcycle store or online, try ebay. Make sure it is SNELL approved.

Hardy har har ... everyone is a comedian these days

Seriously though, the funny thing is I actually have a damn bike helmet, and some old tae kwon do head gear I could put to good use. Sadly, both are not SNELL approved!

I'm gonna try to keep myself in check and not go overboard on a helmet. I guess I leave it up to the pros at OG Racing here in Ashburn to help me on which model to get. And if they have a Viking helmet in stock, I'll pick up one of those too just in case.

Get an SA (auto racing) helmet, not an M (motorcycle). A few driving school organizers are picky and won't allow motorcycle helmets.

OG is a good shop, they will take care of you.

Aren't motorcycle helmets tougher though?

Nope, the Snell standards for an SA helmet are either the same or stricter than those for M helmets. However, the main difference is SA helmets must meet flame resistance requirements while M helmets do not.

So, could you wear a SA helmet on a motorcycle then?

Not sure. I do know the eyeports on M helmets have a larger minimum size than on SA helmets.
