Undecided - need help

Okay, so I've just come back from my first test drive - 135i Vert Auto (non-sport) and a quick drive of a 125i Sport Auto.

First impressions - that engine is an absolute animal. Easy to drive normally, but ready to go feral at any moment. Handling wise it seems no different to my 120i in normal conditions (99.5% of the type of driving I'll do with the car). Brakes wise, slightly better, but only at the extreme edges. Interior wise, no different. Standard features wise, no difference apart from electric front seats (which didn't feel as low as manual seats) compared to my optioned 120i.

So here is the dilemma. The 120i is now just too gutless for me, and the 135i perfectly fills that gap. But I paid $60k three years ago, and was quoted $92k (Auto RRP on road + Bus Nav, Sunroof, Metallic, Hifi-Pro) for a new 135i. Is the engine really worth $30k more....... Even more pressing, my 120i is now worth $40k at most, so is that engine worth $50k more???????

The 125i felt good at speed, but not enough grunt off the line.

BTW, was quoted order now, and get car in Nov/Dec, with a Aug/Sep build.

What a choice mate....

If you're in the financial situation to do it and think you'd get the use from it, I'd do it. The smile I got from playing in the 135 engine was worth that much to me!

If it's going to be a stretch, I'd hold off for a while, maybe consider a second hand one in 12 months when the interest in this car is starting to wane.

That's quite a lot of money for a 120i - what extras is that with?, ever considered the 120d?

Drove the 120d awhile back and wasn't that impressed.

My 120i options are: Auto, Metallic, Sunroof, Xenons, Leather, Hifi Pro, Interior Lights Pkg, Ext + Int Mirror Pkg, Rear PDC, Roof Spoiler. Only options I didn't get was elec seats, heated seats and idrive. So the standard 135i options doesn't match what I've already been living with.

It's not a huge stretch, it just means either get a 135i and race on/off next year, or hold off on the 135i and buy a new faster race car and new trailer, and do as many races I as can be bothered doing. Priorities.....?????

I've already held off racing full-on this year to finish paying a home loan.

Oh and no way I'd go second hand. I've always held the belief somebody gets rid of a car for a reason....even though buying new is the worst "investment"

Get a stripped down manual 135i. On the road for well under $80k in QLD.

Obviously you have never met me then...the longest I have held on to a car was recently - 2.5 years of ownership in a Golf GTI. Second longest was a Boxster S, 18 months...then MINI Cooper S for 10 months, 997 for 10 months...the list goes on. But things have changed. We just had a baby and my wife said no more changing cars. I bought 4 cars in the last 12 months and I am not allowed to buy anymore in the next 5 years. Ok maybe 1 more. I want to change the X3 to a Q5.

Unfortunately it MUST be an auto due other influences. Plus I prefer autos for the daily trip to work. Distance to work = 10km. Time taken = 25-40mins. Enough said.

WAY, I know some people change frequently, but even then you changed for a reason....probably not because something went wrong, but cause something better came along. The people that get your cars are driving a car you knowingly rejected.

Of course there are always folks who brought something they couldn't afford to keep.

It really is just a personal preference. My dad recently got a 3mth old ML demo and only saved a few grand, in return for accepting someone else's scratches and wear.

Funny you say that. Just come back from looking at diesel A3s and ended up there. My experience there left a lot to be desired.....felt like I was at a Toyota dealership

I like your thoughts on 2nd hand cars Aussieracer, they mirror my own.

Aussie, don't discount the Audi's but look elsewhere. I made the mistake of buying there because they had the right car en spec for the right price, since then my encounters have been godawful. Way's had even worse experience.

Don't start with me on those idiots Ryan!

AussieRacer, they are so bad that they lost my order until I chased it up with them...but wait for it....this isn't on a A3 where they probably sell heaps of, this is for a R8 where they only had less than 10 customers who ordered one! Enough said.

Looking at an A3 not for me, but for family member. If I do decide on a 135i, they are a bit keen on taking my 120i since its got low kays, lots of option and well looked after. Just comparing it to the competition with them. Crazy part is they started discounting (to the order of $7k on RRP) when we made it clear weren't ready to buy, and hadn't even asked the price. Sounded a bit desperate....

Ah I see. I would also go for an auto in your position. I drove a 130i auto and was quite impressed by the transmission actually.
