iPod USB cable

Hi there

Will the USB cable supplied with the iPod work with the USB interface?

Or do you have to shell out $160 for the BMW cable?

Thanks

Ahh. Me!

DTNJNQ is correct. You need the combo USB/Aux jack to play DRM restricted music.

I got a brochure today from Auto Classic which lists all the accessories for the 1 series, it shows $161.08 RRP for this cable. Agreed, that's excessive! My SA is 'throwing it in' for me.

Oh, there was also a list of lovely "Vehicle Protection Packages", ranging from $490 for vinyl protection to $3490 for 'Xtreme Vehicle Protection with Security Tint" No thanks.

That's probably why they're so expensive - they have to cover the cost of all the 'freebies'.

What does an ipod to aux cable do? Does it plug into the headphone out of the iPod or into the actual iPod cable connection?

I don't know which one you got given, but I demo'd the one that they're giving me and it works fine. I didn't check any DRM stuff, to be fair, but I will ensure I get the right one .

The cable that comes with the car is not for the ipod. It's a USB extension lead to be used with a USB thumb drive. Most thumb drives can't be used directly in the USB port under the arm rest because they won't allow the arm rest to close. The lead allows you to plug in a thumb drive and place it either in the pouch or cavity near the USB port, whilst still being able to close the arm rest. This lead comes with all 1er coupes...

We tested our iPod in the 135i when we did a test drive. Our PC formatted iPod would not work at all when plugged in with the USB cable only. That included both ripped music (from our own CDs) and iTunes purchased music. The dealer had to plug in the dual cable with both USB and aux to get it working. After that, the music was crystal clear and the track titles displayed on the screen.

But why on earth you need the aux cable plugged in is totally beyond me! I have an iPod adapter in my MINI and it only needs the USB plug.

I can't see any reason why we can't use the white USB cable that comes with the iPod, in conjunction with a male to male 3.5mm stereo cable... (about $14 from Tandy/Dick Smith). Has anyone tried this? Can someone?

Unfortuneatly electronics isnt my forte..
Its all trial and error for me..
Kris just sent me a patch for my phone (Nokia N95 8GB) so that it would sync up the phone book with the I Drive..
It worked perfectly..

Without the patch I could still dial out and receive calls via the I drive, just couldnt acces my phones address book..
