Question Adding subs to standard audio system

I have the standard audio system in my 128 convertable. Was thinking of adding an amp and 8" subwoofer in the trunk. A 8' sub would fit nicely in the small storage area in the center back of the trunk. Has anyone done something similar? Did it improve the sound quality? Any other suggestions?

There have been several threads discussing subwoofers, but I don't recall anyone actually adding a sub to the trunk as yet. Bear in mind there is an ~ 8" sub under each front seat.

Oh, and welcome to 1ADDICTS!!

So subs are included with the standard audio system? It's not clear from what I've read. Thanks for the response and welcome.

I think you only get the subs under the seats with optional premium sound system. I have a JBL 300.1 mono amp and 12" Alpine Type R sub from my old car that I want to install. Bump for answer

I will be changing the entire sound system in my car which includes putting a sub in the trunk. I will let you guys know how that goes when it's all done.

IIRC, subs are inclued in the base system for the US. There are amplifier, head unit, and cone material differences in the premium unit.

how hard would it be to install a new amp and sub in the standard us audio sytem? would i have to remove a ton of stuff to get it in? because if so im just going to forget about adding anything because i would end up breaking something or making something rattle like crazy and make me really mad

Why don't you try putting the subs in the cabin, that way the neighborhood doesn't have to hear it when your trying to get deep base and keep turning it up. Very childish solution to remove the subs and put them outside your listen area.

Thats the exact reason why BMW and other companies are designing their cars with the subs within the CABIN, because just a slight increase in pressure makes a BIG difference.

Keep the subs where they are and buy drop-ins that are superior in quality and efficiency. Adding just 20 watts to each sub, will increase the base response by 2x ..!

BUMP,

So does the base sounds have subs underneath the seats?

Also, can the speakers off a premium sound package be put into a base sound package? Say - plug and play without any wire cutting?
