Changing the Wheels

Hi guys,

Any idea if the dealers will allow me to swap the 135i standard 18" 261M wheels for the 18" star spoke 264 wheels ?

I'd love some aftermarket rims. Something non standard, but I gotta get the car first

Yeah, the Advans are great especially on the GTI. Oz Ultras are good too! For me, it's just that they are everywhere. I'm thinking of some different wheels if I get the 135 though. Might go Enkei, or Prodrive or Volks, maybe SSR if I can find something good... Just to be different.

Or, I might stay stock for a while... I'm more unsure about the run flats...

Me too! I've already worked out the offsets etc and it might just work with the 18x8 and 18x9 (both come with a 40 offset on the Ultraleggera).

This is how it would sit:

front
3mm MORE clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 15mm

rear
6mm MORE clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 18mm

For those that have seen the car in the flesh, does that seem ok with regard to guard clearance?

Tirerack only seems to stock silver and black.

Ozracing.com lists matt graphite silver aswell, I'm not sure what would work best on a white car:

matt graphite silver:

matt black:

Thoughts?

I was thinking of going for the black, but I am still keen on the matt graphite too. I think they both look great on a white car. As for the offset, I think we may have an issue if it extends out that much. The OEM wheels already almost extend out to the edge of the body. Surely there are other 1 series owners out there who has Ultraleggera?

It might mean that we have to keep the tyre widths down a bit...

These look unbelievable on an M5... obviously never seen them in real life on a 1-series, but the photo certainly looks good! They're damn prone to scraping on curbs though

What tyre size did you factor into your calculation?

I didn't factor tyres in, just worked it based on rim widths.

Looks nice but probably much heavier than the stock rims. If I'm going to bother changing rims then I will want there to be a decent weight saving as well.

I'm seriously considering powder coating the stock rims though...

Me too. But that would add weight wouldn't it? I will have a set of street rims and a set of track rims. Track one will be much lighter and most likely the OZ.

Geez we are really splitting hairs if we are worried about the weight of paint / power coat

I'm in two minds as I've had two sets of rims for other cars and it really is a great deal of messing around that I don't want to be bothered with. I don't do that many km each year so putting semi slicks on isn't a problem in terms of usage. My only concern with semi slicks is the tyre noise. It sounds crazy but it can be damn annoying driving all the way down to Wakefield (2 hours) from Sydney with noisy tyres.

Anybody know of semi slicks that aren't noisy at highway speeds?

Haha no there is no such thing as a quiet semi-slick.
