So what does say a Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 in the same size weigh? How much weight can be saved by losing the run craps?

Leads me to believe perhaps the wheel weights for the 264s posted in the first post are inaccurate. Seems the 261s should weigh roughly the same if not lower, and the conventional tires for sure weigh less than the OEM runflats.

FYI

The wheel weights I posted earlier are from this site http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/
261s = 11.8 / 11.23 kg (18 x 7 f / 18 x 8.5 r)
264s = 11.0 / 11.92 kg (18 x 7.5 f / 18 x 8.5 r)
I don't know why the 261s are listed for 7" wide fronts. And now that I look at the numbers they don't make much sense do they?

JAMS 135 Did you weigh the stock wheels / tires before the switch ???????

Very nice looking setup! Even with going to a larger tire, you'll shave a few pounds of unsprung weight off of each corner by getting rid of the runflats... I can't wait to see the subtle difference in the larger tires in the wheel well.

Please take some before and after pics!

I agree that those numbers don't make sense.

In the case the above weights are correct, there's absolutely no reason to swap 264s for 261s unless you could do it free of charge. There's no appreciable difference to offset the cost. In fact, the only reason to seek aftermarket other than to save measureable weight is to shed the tiny 7.5" fronts.

Not everyone is out for weight savings. If he likes the look of the 261 better, it's a great reason to switch.

Yes of course and these things are personal choices. Unfortunately BMW NA gouges you in the process. Seems you should be able to order the car with any OEM wheel BMW approves fitment.

I'm actually considering (haven't made up my mind yet) swapping out the stock 264s for the 261s. And this is purely for cosmetic reasons. I just love the 261s. Now after the swap I'll attempt to reclaim maybe 50% to 75% of the cost by selling the 264s to someone that would like that upgrade.
Now, having said that, I also want to wait a while and see what becomes available in the aftermarket wheel selection which would give me a different look and save weight in the process.
To be continued...
GIL.............you are listening, right?????

Thanks for the "edit" button tip, Turbomg... I learn something every day.

It's mostly emotional for me. I like the look of the 261s better and the car will look the way it does most everywhere else in the world, when equipped with the sport package. Besides, I hate RF tires.. my MCS was transformed when I switched to NRF RE050A tires.

Having said that, I will definitely weigh the stock wheels when they come
off... if there is a weight advantage to my setup; all the better.

As far as the stock wheels and tires, maybe someone will want a deal, otherwise, I will store them until I move on to something else and put them back on then.

Best thread I could find, even if it's 5 years old. So by math, from TireRack:

261M wheels--Front 52 lbs - 26 lbs 225/40/18 RE760s = 26 lbs. Rear 54 lbs - 26 lbs 245/35/18 RE760s = 28 lbs.

Oddly enough, TireRack says the current Dunlop RFTs are 24 lbs. 215/40/18 and 27 lbs. 245/35/18 (stock specs). I thought RFTs would weigh more.

This means stock setup for MSport package folks with 261M wheels is 50 lbs in front, 55 lbs in rear, total wheels + tires.
