Things you can buy instead of the $2,100.00 Navigation System

This price is just ridiculous, there are systems available (both from car manufacturers and aftermarket) that include Nav AND a hard-drive for music AND videos AND a rear camera.

I would have bought it for a fair price like $500, like I bought just about every other option.

I want to own my 135 for a long time. Just another thing to break IMO... I have no problems going after market nav.

Besides, I'd rather have a new 50' 1080p HDTV in my living room.

Why the whining?

I can understand the decision not to spring for the nav/iDrive/iPhone set-up -- even though it seamlessly integrates almost all electronic functions that a driver will want to access.

But why all the whining?

You don't want the factory nav system? Don't buy it. If you still want real-time driving directions, you can always ask a guy at the next gas station: Very, very cheap!

If you love aftermarket GPS, there's always plenty of Velcro or suction cups.

Or, God help you, this:

Not sure about the OEM goodness thing.

BMW's nav system is not only overpriced, but it's not exactly known for it's ease of use & design. Except for the fact that the factory system is nicely intigrated into the dash, you would be way better off with a $300 Garmin IMHO.

The other consideration is having to deal with i-drive along with the nav system. I know a lot of people who would still pass on the nav even if it was priced cheaply!

They have that choice (ie to pass on the NAV at even lower price points). But this is all subjective, people.

Nobody's twisting your arm to buy a BMW, either. Get over this topic already.

It's not just a $2100 nav. It integrates most functions of the car into a single point, including ventilation, car settings, distance control, warning systems, audio systems, diagnostics, telephone function, and allows for use of the steering wheel buttons and onboard voice commands.

It might not be the best true nav software out there, but it does A BOATLOAD more than just nav, plus it's integrated. BMW did some serious R&D to get all those systems integrated into the car, and they don't just sell it and abandon it. There are updates and continue to make it run better. That's why it's $2100, and it's not overpriced IMO.

I love the iDrive on my e90. I got it because of doing ED, and not wanting to have that stress of my wife reading maps (who really cannot), plus I had not warmed to the "single hump" dashboard on the e90 when they first came out. I can't justify it on the e82 though, FOR ME.

Sure, you could get the nav and reach your destination via the most direct path, or you could get a reflash and get there after having the most fun.

Or hookers and blow...because that's fun too.

if you look at most car companies, navigation is usually a 2k option... with the exception of Honda, which is 1k....

If I didn't live in Europe I'm not sure I would have bought it. Price here thru military sales is $1900 but you have to source the DVD (which I have already--paid $100).

The $2,000 could be better used for software upgrade or suspension to satisfy the Michael Schumacher in me.

In the end I'll have the nav system plus KW coilovers, H&R ARBs, and software. It's only money.

Not only is the Nav unit hideous and expensive, being an old-school male I think I'll be relying on that traditional old world tool known to many crusty mavericks as the map. In lieu of Nav, Dinan mod.
